If there is an aviation program, it will be an academy. Not knowing the full lay out of the KAA campus, I have read that there is the main building and two office buildings. Maybe one of the office buildings is converted into a space for an aviation academy with dedicated classrooms for the program.

I can see some of the School Board being stupid enough to suggest something else for KAA but the majority of the School Board should be able to read the room and realize what buying this building without public discussion and not using it for the Western HS will mean for their political careers.

Another TJ would be very welcomed for a lot of families. I don’t think it would hurt political careers for that to go through. Sure, maybe Dixit loses some votes but not nearly enough to lose that seat, and again, another TJ would be politically popular for most of the county.

I live in Fox Mill and think a TJ2 is needed for the County. I don't think it belongs at KAA but I can see a decent number of parents who have kids at Carson who would welcome a STEM school in the area. Carson has well over 200 kids a year apply for TJ and around 50 a year attending TJ. Having a STEM academy that didn't require a long commute wouldn't be awful. It is not what is needed at the KAA location but I can see where a decent number of parents in the Western area would be supportive of a STEM school in the area. There will be some who would hate the idea because they want TJ for prestige purposes and would be disappointed if their kid went to TJ 2 but I think plenty of families would be interested.

Just to be clear, I don't see KAA as the building for that. I think KAA needs to be the new Western High School. I do hope that Fox Mill moves there because I don't like IB and would love to not need to pupil place for an AP program. The families who like IB have SLHS nearby and there will be room for the kids in the IB program.

+1. We are zoned rocky run/chantilly and would welcome a TJ 2 option nearby. We aren't interested at all in TJ1 due to the distance/long bus route.

+2. TJ is far for the western part of Fairfax. When they talk about equitable access to programming, this is one of the starkest inequities.

The most run down high schools are all in eastern Fairfax so cry me a river.

Regardless, equitable access is in the new boundary policy, so I’m guessing that’s what Dunne and Frisch are keying off of.

It’s even greedier to be asking for a TJ West when the neighborhoods near Carson have been waiting decades for their own HS.

If you think equitable access to programming is greedy, then you need to take that up with Frisch, Dunne, and the rest of the school board. They are the ones that wrote the policy. it’s about an hour between KAA and TJ. Likely many kids in that area don’t apply to TJ because of the inequity.

Lots of kids with severe disabilities travel hours one way to access programming. Life isn't fair.

You apparently didn’t read the part where I said you need to take it up with the school board since they wrote the policy demanding equitable access to programming.

So how far is it from Annandale to the Chantilly Academy if a kid wants to take a class there? If they took "equitable access to programming" as literally as you do, they'd be eliminating TJ, not creating another one.

Yes, but there are close by neighborhoods going in. One is being built by the DMV--right across the street from Westfield. Sully Station is 2 miles away. Cub Run is around 2 miles. Virginia Run is in the area. Pleasant Valley Rd is 2 miles.
The neighborhoods and schools in the KAA area are 7 miles from Westfield and separated--not only from the school--but from other Westfield neighborhoods.
That does not build a community school.

I doubt a second TJ would be a Governor’s school, so it would be all FCPS kids. And I don’t think that KAA should be TJ2 but I would probably prefer another STEM academy, like Edison, to an aviation academy.

I think KAA should be a plain old HS.

It’d be interesting to take a poll of Fairfax county to see how many people would support a magnet over a school devoted to fixing pretend capacity issues in your area. (Though I’ll concede that your split feeder situation does suck, but will remind you that you bought your house knowing the situation).

I think you’d probably get 80% support a new magnet with available options for their kids to go to it if they are smart enough.

It’s the reason it’s actually being discussed by the board, rather than just anonymous internet buffoons on an anonymous forum pretending like they deserve a school just because there was a placeholder in the CIP.

Of course people would vote that way because they would potentially benefit from a magnet school, whereas if they aren't in the area of KAA they wouldn't benefit from it. People are obviously going to vote in their self interest.
