UMD College Park Acceptance Rates for MCPS Students

Anonymous
UMD early action acceptance notifications have been going out. With all the talk of grade inflation, no finals, reassessments, etc, do we see any impact on how the students are doing when applying to University of Maryland? How about the limited enrollment majors such as computer science, engineering, and business? Any information would be appreciated.

As a public university for the state, UMD already sets aside space for a good number of in-state students. So I’m sure MCPS kids still get in at a healthy rate. Though I also wouldn’t be surprised if that number has dropped down from what it was in previous years.

All we know is that this year the admit rate for UMD is 34%, down from 51% 2 years ago. The number of applicant has increased significantly.

Here's some stats from Bethesda Magazine on acceptances for students from Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Walt Whitman, Walter Johnson, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Richard Montgomery, Thomas S. Wootton, and Montgomery Blair in Silver Spring.

For fall 2022, 2589 students from those 8 schools applied to UMD; 1495 (or 57.7%) were accepted, and 608 (or 40.7% of those accepted) ultimately enrolled. (https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/09/13/here-are-the-colleges-where-bethesda-area-high-school-grads-applied-got-accepted-and-enrolled/)

For fall 2021, the data is for only 6 schools (Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Walt Whitman, Walter Johnson, Richard Montgomery, Winston Churchill, and Montgomery Blair). For those schools, in that year, 1978 applied, 1104 (or 55.8%) got in. (https://bethesdamagazine.com/2021/09/06/college-bound-6/)

Feel free to do the math for 2020 (https://bethesdamagazine.com/2020/10/05/college-bound-5/) or 2019 (https://bethesdamagazine.com/2019/09/30/college-bound-4/)

And feel free to discuss the validity of the statistics. I'm just the messenger.

You are so wrong here. Admit rates for in-state students are over 50% every year.

Yeah, I was gonna say, 34% would be unreal.

Are you basing that on past year Common Data set? 2022-2023 isn't out yet and there were more applicants for class of 2026. I'd also like to see the state dig into their admissions to see if they discriminate based on gender.

To those saying I made up the 34%, it's right there in UMD's internal stats, already provided by another poster on a College Forum thread about UMD:

https://www.irpa.umd.edu/CampusCounts/Admissions/apps_ug.pdf

The admit rate changed because there were more applicants.
Notice the trend was there for Fall 2021 as well. Admit rate went from 51% to 40% to 34%.

I suspect it has to do with Covid and test-optional admissions. No one knows whether this trend will continue, but it's not just UMD, people. It would make sense that most colleges that have gone test-optional have received more applications, and their admit rate has therefore decreased.

My senior is already in to UMD Honors - he submitted all test scores, including AP exams. I suspect that the only way to see your way through these admit rates is to NOT go test-optional.

wow, thanks for that info.

Yes, 2022 appears to have been much more competitive. All scores are up -- SAT, GPA, # of AP credits -- while the admit rate was down.

Will be interested to see what 2023 fall numbers look like.

As an aside, I posted on the UMD EA thread that I'm hearing that more RMIB students didn't get into UMD, though I don't know what the majors were.

I believe the big jump for the Fall 2021 is largely due to UMD moving to common app.

34% is accurate for last year - I saw it on the UMD website. Here's what I want to know.

What is the admission rate for in state vs. OOS?
What is the admission rate for MoCo vs. other counties?

That's what I think would be interesting but I bet those figures aren't published.

WOW! That is staggering to see. Well, damn. UMD just got even more competitive than it already was!
