The admit rate changed because there were more applicants.
Notice the trend was there for Fall 2021 as well. Admit rate went from 51% to 40% to 34%.

I suspect it has to do with Covid and test-optional admissions. No one knows whether this trend will continue, but it's not just UMD, people. It would make sense that most colleges that have gone test-optional have received more applications, and their admit rate has therefore decreased.

My senior is already in to UMD Honors - he submitted all test scores, including AP exams. I suspect that the only way to see your way through these admit rates is to NOT go test-optional.

WOW! That is staggering to see. Well, damn. UMD just got even more competitive than it already was!

I also wonder if it's because the more selective colleges are also now much more competitive and the costs are just insane. UMD has great ROI for majors like CS. No brainer. I know it is for us - CS Honors.

My child is at Blair HS. If you look at the data from Bethesda Magazine and Naviance over the last few years, the admit rate seems to be around 50%. It is very consistent, plus/minus 2-3 points each year.

What is the admission rate for in state vs. OOS?
What is the admission rate for MoCo vs. other counties?

That's what I think would be interesting but I bet those figures aren't published.

For 2022, the instate rate was 43%, OOS 33%

(see https://www.usmd.edu/IRIS/DataJournal/Applications/?report=UG-Applicants-First-Time-Admission&Residency=OUT)

Take out test optional and out of state applicants and the admit rate is closer to 57% for MD residents who submit test scores.

What is the admit rate for in state and no scores?

If you really want to blow your mind, look at the average stats for admitted students:

- Weighted GPA = 4.47
- Midpoint SAT = 1445
- Midpoint ACT = 33

Also, on the 2021 common data set (I believe this is an unweighted GPA) 85% of kids have a 4.0.

Finally, there is the honors college where on an information session, they said the average GPA was 4.65, middle ACT 1480-1560, and ACT 34.35. Mind-blowing.

Feels like a no-brainer here too. Also CS Honors.

Honors college at UMD is a complete waste of time and helps zero in getting a job. My daughter was there and graduated 2 years ago. No one cared on her resume or in interviews.

Looking at Churchill's Naviance from last year - it's over 70% acceptance rate.

Are there other benefits to honors college like social? I've looked at the choices and don't find it all that compelling and unless there's some reason would advise my kids to follow their interests instead of creating these additional hoops even if they qualify. If you are offered something like BK do you have to participate to get the scholarship?

Man, at first blush I was gonna say that grade inflation is real, but you can’t grade inflate your way to those median SAT scores.

It just goes to show that more kids than ever are smarter and getting good grades so just being smart alone and doing well in school and on test’s isn’t enough to stand out when applying for colleges.

No, it shows that very few kids are submitting test scores now and the only ones who do have good scores. What a shock! It means that the mediocre kids are hiding behind their inflated GPAs.

+1 that's the problem with TO, and grade inflation in MCPS (and other school districts).

What major? Also, I don't think the experience is about getting a job. It's more about being with high achieving peers, and creating a smaller college atmosphere in a huge college.

Plus for CS I heard the new dorm for honors college students is new and nicer.
