Middle aged mom hair

I've been doing at home haircuts for my pixie since 2020. It's looking pretty blah and I feel frumpy, but I don't want to spend real haircut prices for a technically improved version of the same cut, so I went on Pinterest.

...pixie mullets, you guys. This is the type of cut I feel like I spent my teenage years trying to avoid when I was growing out short hair. I hate hate hate it. This dates me, right? What kind of short cut can I get that looks cute and stylish that...isn't that? Or do I just accept that I will never be stylish again?

That doesn't solve the problem at all! "Growing out" to shoulder lengtb takes a year and you need to get it styled in the meantime because it's a mess.

A mullet isn't the solution. I'd get a wig or rock headbands and wraps. I also would never cut my hair so short that there's no styling options to change my look. A pixie cut scream " I can't be bothered to style my hair" and "I have little kids" and "I think I have the face for this".

You don’t want a pixie mullet, you want a bixie. Bob-pixie. It’s very on trend right now.

Haha, i think all of those are true! I just need a change. Headbands look horrible on me though.

I've been cutting my own hair since the pandemic. It varies between medium long and medium short. I just cut it last weekend.

I would never attempt to cut my own hair if I wanted it short. The back is too hard to cut decently. Go to a barber if you don't want to spend much. They are better with cutting short hair. DH spends like $20 on his haircut at a barber.

Another vote for seeing a barber. I did that back in my pixie days, and it always turned out great.

“Real haircut prices” can vary significantly. I would never pay what I think most of DCUM pays for haircuts, but there are places like Hair Cuttery and Supercuts that offer more economical options. I think some beauty schools might also offer discounted haircuts. Also, if you let your hair grow, it may not need to be cut as frequently as you have to cut your hair to maintain a pixie.

OP here. My partner does it - thanks YouTube. It's not salon-quality but better than Supercuts, which I have also experienced. I am open to a a barber but as I mentioned in the OP, I'm looking for a style, not just a cleaner version of my current cut.

A good stylist can help you with both style and cut. Mine is great at both, and is well worth the price (about $100, I think).

You get what you pay for. Just see a fabulous stylist, it really makes a HUGE difference. Cut back elsewhere if you need to.

A traditional barber won't give her the texture that she likely needs cut into her hair. She needs to see a stylist.

The pixie is cute/fashionable if you are artsy and creative or under the age of 30. beyone that, its mom hair and screams no frills functionality only. At least get a stylisth longish bob.

The “bixie” has to be really really well cut and styled daily to avoid a frumpy look. But definitely better than the mullet.
