MCPS communications center failings

Really losing patience with MCPS.

So while the students are corralled in buses and parents are waiting to understand what is going on the head of communications accidentally sends the email to staff instead of parents? If they cannot competently send an email to the right parties, how can they keep our children safe?

Einstein parent here.

My understanding is that it was the principals responsibility to send the message to parents. He was managing the situation and he sent to staff. The deputy superintendent said MCPS acknowledges now that having the principal be in charge of both the safety situation and the emailing is not a good system. They are going to change it. I’m not sure to what.

Another Einstein parent. I do not fault the principal in any way for what happened - and I actually feel terrible for him that he was supposed to send a mass email to parents in the midst of a crisis. Other than the communication fowl which shouldn't have been his responsibility in the first place, the response was handled well. The kid was immediately identified, all of our kids knew what to do and what was happening, and everyone remained safe. That is what matters to me. Einstein is a wonderful community, my kid has thrived there.

My problem is not with the principal—it was with Chris crank comms guy. Parents, staff and students at BCC in September received zero info during an hour long lockdown/threat of gun on campus. At that time promises were made of fixing the way comms was handled. Nothing was learned or fixed months later.

MCPS has a $3 billion dollar budget. Having an efficient and modern communication plan during emergencies is not too much to ask.

Agree but outside agitators love to post here to help their political goals so instead of focusing on the good they'll find something to pick at.

MCPS Central Office employees really need to come up with a better approach than acting like parents are overreacting to its failings. This approach really doesn’t work.

It’s a sign of mismanagement and incompetence that we as parents have to point this out to them in the first place. MCPS should be ashamed.

Try over a year later. Churchill parents had the same complaints about communication after a student from another high school threatened students and a parent with a knife in the bus loop. Magruder parents also had similar complaints during the school shooter incident.

MCPS Central Office have had plenty of opportunities to learn from prior incidents to improve communication yet nothing has been done to improve communication.
