Errands after dark - am I the only one reconsidering

Anonymous
A reported armed car jacking in DTSS at the Safeway around 7 pm!
Reported as a gun held to woman’s head.

Again, not midnight. Not 2:45 AM. Just after dinner time. Terrifying.
While I realize it gets dark earlier now, I’ve made it a point to go to CVS, Giant, gas station. etc. in the daylight. ATM use aside, I never gave much thought to running the typical evening errand. Until this winter.

In college in the 90s we did "take back the night" marches and safe spaces and all that, but I was never duped that the world is actually safe..since Chandra Levy I haven't walked alone in a park and certainly wouldn't do errands after dark OR early morning. The current system/and changemakers don't "care" about crime victims. Not only are they not proactive, but not even reactive. Be wise and look out for Numero uno.

I feel you, the increased crime has gotten me worried as well. I don't wear my rings while running errands, carry nice bags, etc. The fact that these criminals have no recourse makes me be extra cautious. I often cross street when I I group on terms from far away.

Yes. A different world than 3 years ago.

You’re insane.

No. If you want to actually keep yourself safer, you'll walk instead of driving, day or night. Car accidents and obesity, that's what'll kill you, not crime.

Sadly, I have absolutely stopped running errands in the evening and night. I know that doesn’t prevent everything, and over this past year it has seemed to make sense. I started thinking about the Giant and CVS nearby my house the same way I used to think about ATM machine in terms of better time of day to go and times to try to avoid.

Yes, I try to avoid errands in the dark now, and I'm in NOVA. I used to go grocery shopping a lot at night pre-pandemic.

This is our reality right now. I'm in a nice neighborhood in NOVA, and now we have severely mentally ill people roaming at night and tent dwellers. I live next to a park. People have been harassed on the trail by scarey men. It's the times we are in now.

No, that's emotional not rational. I'm more concerned about heart disease and rush hour traffic

It's true. No one has been mentally ill in the past, this is a new thing

I've never feared my neighborhood at night and my house has a walk score of 93. I also live in Falls Church City.

I agree that something has shifted and I also do not run errands at night anymore. Never gave it a second thought before.

It is correct for people to be more cautious. It is up to each individual to take precautions appropriate to the level of risk they feel.
