| 12 yr old has an Apple Watch, no phone yet. Wants to listen to music at bedtime. Been awake 11 or later. I decided I would shut off the watch access at 10 pm. Now she falls asleep shortly thereafter. I know this is better and I’m going to stick to it but she thinks I’m being mean as hell because “it’s just music”. Please tell me I’m not being crazy and that this is fairly mild as bedtimes go. (Give me the reassurance I need to keep being “so mean”) |

Even a 10pm bedtime doesn't give your kid the optimal amount of sleep. My 13yo goes to bed no later than 9pm and gets up at 7am (which I know is unusual).
Sleep is an essential component to health, especially at her age. Tell her she's lucky to have a parent that cares about her wellbeing and then ignore any further complaints. |

Ah being “mean” is in the job description.
You gotta do what you need to do for her sleep. If the music is keeping her up, and she isn’t getting sufficient sleep, it needs to be cut off. Just wait until she’s dating and you’re establishing a curfew, if she thinks you’re mean now.

She doesn’t get up til 7:30 so 10 pm is actually great. |
I used to have my radio going half the night I think. There was a late countdown, lol. Is she getting up when she needs to? |
a 13 year old who goes to bed at 9 is very unusual. |
PP. Yes, I know. But she doesn't function well on limited sleep and she's smart enough to know it. Plus, she's pretty active in sports so she's ready to sleep by the time 9am rolls around. I consider us lucky that she's okay with it. FWIW: https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/features/students-sleep.htm |
| Maybe have different rules for different days of the week |
This is good advice. Weekends or holidays, music until an agreed-upon time, nights before school, music is cut off earlier. |
Op here and yeah, we’re talking about school nights. |

You are doing the right thing. I know, it sucks to have to be mean, & you kiss is right that friends will not have this rule - but I think you are being reasonable, this is a very fair shutdown time.
My 14 yr old has the same rule, everything is off at 10 on school nites. Later on Fri/Sat, depending on what is going on. So if I were you, I’d stick to the mean 10 rule during the week. My DC is pretty accepting of it at this point…so the complaints will eventually lessen when they understand it is a just a hard stop in your household. Now I just hear complaining/negotiating on Fri /Sat, lol. |
| *kid not kiss |
Does 12 year old go to private school? |
Lol someone keeps asking this on all of the parenting posts…it is a joke, I guess? |

I used to listen to “Love Line” on the radio!
Phones come into kitchen at 10pm so teens can to music through Alexa if they want. |
