In a much anticipated clash of heavyweights over the future of the ever-shrinking teaching workforce, the contender in the west side of the ring has landed this year’s first haymaker! Though slightly smaller in stature, LCPS has managed a rippling, if unsurprising, first blow. A first FY24 budget proposal has BIG raises included, a jab sure to be felt for the rest of budget season. Yes, that’s 5%-8% for ALL employees in LCPS. What’s more? It was a ONE-TWO PUNCH! More days of sick leave and personal leave were included FOR ALL TEACHERS!! WHAT!? More money AND more work-life balance? UNBELIEVABLE!! They are really going for this! To add insult to injury, Loudoun’s coach who orchestrated this start of the performance is no other than Dr. Daniel Smith, recently deserted principal of Lake Braddock Secondary School! The DRAMA!!! Even with this, you have to wonder how long he will be sticking around with the rate at which LCPS is firing their senior coaching staff! Eyes turn quickly to the opposite side of the ring for Thursday’s reply from fighter Fairfax. Anything less than a resounding reciprocation of Loudoun’s opening salvo will be seen as a major blow in this bout, and will be sure to turn even more heads of Fairfax staff toward better paying jurisdictions. And all this in a year of increasing resignations and shortages! Edge of your seat stuff!!! Will Fairfax respond? How will they sweeten the deal? Is this the beginning of the inevitable decline of FCPS teacher quality, or the beginning of something far grander? Tune in on Thursday at 1:30 to find out!! |
| i lost brain cells reading this drivel. |
| Proposed 5-8% plus step or with step? How many more sick days and personal days? FCPS currently allows for 5 personal, if approved. |
| But but but our caring culture! |
+1. We know what OP is after but yawn. |
|
Can I get the cliff notes?
Is it LCPS is giving teacher raises and more days off, wonder if FCPS will do the same? |
But we get like 10 sick days. I take plenty of days off during the year, 6-8 day normally and still have tons left. I’d rather have the money. |
| No one wants to work for LCPS. We have so many teachers in FCPS who actually live in Loudoun. LCPS will try anything but it won’t work. FCPS is superior. |
I thought it was interesting enough and I don't even live in Virginia anymore. Not the OP, either. |
More sick leave and personal days is useless unless people have unavoidable medical needs (childbirth, major illness, surgery). Taking a day off is a PITA to get a (quality) sub, make sub plan, and pick up the pieces upon return. Does Loudoun have higher quality and quantity subs than FCPS? |
|
Why do teachers need more days off? They already get plenty, and the schedule has a ton of built in days off for appts, etc.
I see being excited about more money, but more days off seems like low value. |
Totally the OP posting this. |
| We will get nothing. Staff meeting yesterday was our principal saying staffing ratios are getting tighter so expect larger class sizes and potential destaffing notifications coming this spring in preparation for next year. Didn't sound like a precursor to "and a raise and extra vacation!" |
Who wouldn't want to work for LCPS? It used to be that FCPS paid more so people who lived in Loudoun and other surrounding counties would come to FCPS to work. But now other counties pay more, have a better calendar, and are under WAY less scrutiny. If I lived close enough to the LCPS/FCPS border, I'd move to LCPS in a heartbeat for more pay and less stress. |
Does LCPS still offer Covid leave? I know that’s an issue in APS where we have to use our sick leave for the 5 day quarantine (that’s what I’m doing now) it’s not a big deal for me but staff with young children or fewer years are struggling. |
