First of all, while lower middle class might be a reasonable moniker if you're in the DC area, you are not working poor. Working poor is people who make minimum wage or close to it. $16 an hour, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year (as you don't get paid vacation, holidays, or sick days) and you're at $32k a year. Even a dual income family is at $64k. You make double that. So the first thing I'd make is a mind shift change.
What I would recommend though, is not side jobs, it's looking at your current salaries/career paths and seeing what your options are for increasing your income. You don't want a temporary boost of a few thousand dollars - you want to be growing your incoming in a sustainable way. So - what do you do and what does your spouse do (assuming you both work)? What education do you have? Are there any other skills you have on top of your current job that are worth noting? |
| You aren’t lower middle class if you have $200k or equity. Most LMC people don’t have that much in savings. Just live within your means and you will be fine. |

Dog walking and dog sitting. 2 dogs at $50 a day= $700 extra a week = $36,400 a year.
My close friend does this and has a doggie daycare room in his house (the front office room). He has 5 dogs a day. He interviews the dogs to make sure they all get along, but the dogs enjoy each other's company. A few of his clients are businessmen who travel often. On holidays he gets way more than $50, plus they tip. |
NP. There's a class below middle class. People who have zero savings are lower class. OP is correct that they are middle class. |
| You make a little more than the average income in DC. You are solidly in the middle of middle class. You are absolutely NOT "the working poor," but you are an excellent troll. |
| Please don’t call yourself the working poor. |
| What is an “ adjusted” household income”? OP |
| Okay, what's your question? Do you want SNAP benefits? |
|
Uh huh. What's your gross? We have a similar AGI and a house worth a lot less (paid 290, reassessed at 370, although I think this is high). I'd never call myself working poor because there are measures for this like % FPL and ALICE, and six figures aint it. Also, what AGI doesn't tell you is that we are saving for retirement and college and never have to sweat food or shelter.
Maybe stop reading DCUM, these rich people are ridiculous |
He sounds single and work from home. Kind of hard to do that with spouse, kids and regular jobs. Also, need 24/7/365 availability. Not just evenings or weekends when it suits you. |

What are your current jobs?
Do you feel financially tight or just that you have less than others? |
| What does your monthly budget look like? |
| Are you in DC? You can net $300 a night or so serving or bartending. |
Move to a low cost of living area. |
