summer internship

Anonymous
DS is a junior at one of the Ivies and has applied for over 250 business/finance internship positions but no offers for summer 2023. Many of his friends are also in the same position, no offers. There are a few of his friends that secure an internship for summer 2023 but all of them have connections with the firms that offered them the internships. Their parents either work for the company or know someone higher up at the company. The only offer DS received so far is from one of the non-profit that doesn't pay well. DS is very depressed at the moment and he thinks that unless you have connections, going to Ivies is not going to help with good paying jobs. Not sure what I should tell him.

What major?

Isn’t it a bit late for that? It is not uncommon for kids to secure IB internships one year in advance nowadays.

Keep applying downward in prestige. He should apply nationally.

The economy isn’t great. He should keep the non-profit option open as long as possible and take it if nothing else pans out.

He needs to do direct contact with decision makers ... follow on LInkedin, message, tweet, etc. My dd wrote to every Princeton Alum she could get contact info for and landed a sweet gig.

Consider government internships. They generally pay better than a non-profit. There are Federal agencies who oversee finance.

Has he heard back from them all alteady? My kid (in STEM) had applied by now but did not hear back this early.,

DC is at a large state university (not east coast) and a freshmen. He is a CS major and applied to several internships. He just accepted an offer with financial/banking company mid December. He was interviewing over Thanksgiving/early December with a few companies.

Doesn’t matter. You do it for the experience and connections (we are not wealthy btw)

You can get better pay at financial non-profit and good connections too. Internships at the SEC or Federal Reserve don't pay that much. Non-profit financial SROs pay much better.

"Going to the Ivies" isn't a uniform thing, OP
