Submit claim through homeowners or flood insurance?

Anonymous
My basement flooded because my sump pump died. I lost my boiler, washer and dryer etc. All of the appliances were very old. Boiler was 30+ years. In total, it will probably cost me $12k between the water cleanup, new sump pump, new boiler and washer/dryer.

The homeowners company is saying they will cut me a check for $5k. I haven’t even spoken to the separate flood insurance company yet. Is there an advantage to going through flood insurance instead of homeowners?

I do not have a mortgage on the property and I do get concerned about my homeowners premiums going up because of a claim.

Does your homeowner's policy have a sump pump rider?

Basement losses due to water can be weird. Most policies won't cover the loss of your mechanical items such as the boiler, washer drier etc. due to that type of flooding.

Flood insurance generally covers you for events like a creek or river that enters your home, I doubt they cover flooding due to a sump pump failure.

FEMA insurance covers systems in a basement and can cover appliances, but it will not cover personal property or structural improvement like finished floors

Yes. I’m told the limit is $5k and they are going to mail me a $5k check.

But I also understand this may be covered by flood insurance.

You should look at your policy but I thought FEMA flood insurance required a certain acreage of flooding or a number of adjacent properties flooding to trigger.

The question is about which policy I should pursue a claim for. I am told both will cover it. I have flood insurance and home owners. I’m trying to figure out if one policy is a better option. My guess is that I should pursue flood so my home owners insurance doesn’t increase.

Is this the flood insurance you have? This is what I have and I don’t think it covers a loss due to a sump pump failure.

The question isn’t if it’s covered. Both insurance companies have told me it is. I am trying to figure out which policy is better for me to file under.

If you make a claim on your homeowners insurance, it will increase.

Can the two policies coordinate benefits or supplement each other so that you get full coverage reimbursement for the total of all of your covered damages ?

Contact the flood insurer & ask.

Unless there was a flood, flood insurance doesn't cover the loss.

So, you're reasoning is the following? OP has paid for a rider. OP has a loss that exceeds the limit on the rider and the insurance company has agreed to pay the limit. But OP shouldn't make the claim? Pretty idiotic reasoning don't you think?
