| It's scary in DC |
| Certain violent crime certainly is |
| Do you have data to back that up? Everything I've seen has said the opposite. But lots of fear mongering news articles. |
| I don’t think so. Did you live here in the 90’s? |
| "approaching" is doing a lot of work here |
| There were 222 homicides in 2021, which was the most since 2003. So yes, it’s factually accurate to say that violent crime is approaching 1990s levels based on current trends. |
| Yes, it’s unacceptable. |
But was 2020 221 homicides or 21? That’s more helpful information than saying it was the most since a certain year. Was the 1990s 230 homicides or 500? “Approaching” doesn’t tell us much when people can interpret it as different amounts. |

Over 400 in late 80s and early 90s. 482 in 1991.
Lots of crack. It was bad. |

Homicide is down 11 percent in 2022 over 2021 year-to-date. Total violent crime is down 7 over 2021 year-to-date (though in 2021, violent crime was up 3 percent over 2020, which is alarming).
But in 1999 — the last year of the 1990s, obviously, but also the low point of crime for the decade — there were 8,448 violent crimes in D.C. In 2021, there were 4,117, and so far this year, there have been 3,746. Property crime is down 4 percent year-to-date compared to 2021, but even there, 1999 saw 33,420 property crimes in D.C., and so far this year, there've been 22,288. So it's clearly not accurate to say crime is approaching '90s levels here, if violent crime is half what the BEST year of the 1990s had and property crimes are down by about a third. That's not even getting into the RATES of all those crimes, which were even higher than the raw numbers, since in 1999, D.C.'s population was 519,000, compared to about 640,000 now. | Good maybe this will encourage gentrifiers to move back to Virginia where they belong. |
| It is fully terrifying. |
That's smart. Then you can have your 1980's DC economy and quality of life also. |
Have murders and violent crime increased or decreased since 2015? |
| Most of DC's homicides aren't random. It's the drug trade. |
