I am in the second trimester and need to “right the ship” in terms of diet after a really tough first trimester that had me constantly eating. I’ve now developed bad habits and need a reality check. If you kept your weight gain to a minimum during pregnancy, and credit your diet for that result, what did you eat in a typical day/week? Did you allow yourself to get hungry? Did you limit carbs?
For context, when I am not pregnant I have to eat pretty low carb and/or skip meals to not gain weight. It requires me to be hungry from time to time. I am “normal” weight but on the high end of normal, and obesity is endemic in my family. Thanks! |

Pregnancy isn't a time to be dieting. You want to eat healthy balanced meals, and as you go along you will probably want more smaller meals rather than 3 large meals.
That said, I felt very healthy following the GW midwives diet. They never asked me about it, but since I had committed to the program I stuck with it and that's how I like to eat for the most part. Only whole foods, no added sugar, no processed food like cereals. Lots of fruit and veg. |
| Thanks! I just looked this up and it gave me some inspiration. |
| I am naturally very thin, but definitely had to right the ship in my first two pregnancies after going a little overboard in the first trimester (I ended up gaining 32 pounds the fist time and 26 the second time, so don't worry - your gains will probably even out). I'm pregnant with my third and I have been able to limit my weight gain this time because I learned that I had high cholesterol after my second. So far, I'm eat a lot of egg whites (no yolks because high cholesterol), sweet potato fries (cut up and baked sweet potatoes), rotisserie chicken, fruit, siggi yogurt, and lots of veggies. I'm not a big fan of getting prepared foods, but I have bought salads a few times from CHOPT because it feels a little indulgy and tastes really good. I love sweets, so I still eat sweets but I try not to eat sweets or packaged foods that I'm not really excited about. |
| I am fat and lost weight during my pregnancy, effortlessly. I actually think that’s really common, it’s like the signals are reversed somehow. |
