This is what it is like at our City’s one high school. I care about our kids. I care that they go to a “school” like this. I care that there is no talk of change. I care that the SB epitomizes cowardice. But, for those who want to act like this doesn’t exist or it’s all made-up, you may just care when you can’t sell your house because no reasonable person would send their kids into this environment.

Yes! The superintendent and school board were really put on notice last night. Even though it was only the CIP that was discussed, parents really showed up with signs to let ACPS know that the Minnie Howard chaos is unacceptable!

It was amazing an amazing sight. After years of bending to the will of PTAC and Alexandria's political establishment, their own fears that it would make things awkward at holiday parties or that their kids wouldn't get picked for sports teams they really showed up for all ACPS kids last night.

My DH is a coach in the city. Can't get too specific but he will not select any PTAC offspring or the offspring of about a dozen other families.

This is a joke. No one showed up last night. The funny part is that staff and the school board do freak out when anyone shows up. I did my time going to school board meetings for years - it was amusing to watch. They get totally rattled.

But last night they were joking and pretending to care about overcrowding and space. They looked cold and callus but they can because no one was there and that says everything.

I feel like the state needs to step in and help fix this. Alexandria is too insular and has shown gross incompetence at handling public education. The city obviously needs help from those with broader experience. The state needs to step in on a social services level and at the education level.

Alexandrians are always looking for a savior. Never willing to act and save themselves. No, the state should not step in.

It's not just the school board. It's the parents and voters. All cowards. I'm so tired of the pearl clutching from parents who get intimidated by the PTAC crew and then settle down and follow directions from the people they think are their betters. This is a city of followers and cowards.

As a long time alexandria resident who has a child entering ACPS next year for the first time (other children are in private), could someone please give me the rundown on what PTAC even is? I’ve tried googling and just run into private Facebook groups.

It is true but to be fair, it can be hard if you are a federal government employee to speak up because the PTAC mob will attack you personally if you speak up and may even highlight your federal employment and suggest you are misusing your position by trying to advocate for your child and your child’s peers.

Maybe with more numbers the risks of speaking up would lessen but I think the experience with Open ACPS (regardless if you agreed with that group’s position) shows even numbers does not reduce the risk of public shaming from the Alexandria establishment.

No, it's an excuse to keep quiet. A kid has been murdered, a kid has been raped and untold beatings are happening everyday. What's it going to take for parents to stop making excuses?

Westfall ran for school board with her work as a federal employee as one of her campaign points. She hangs out with the president of PTAC. Ask her why her campaign was OK but a parent who is a federal employee saying violence is bad is not.
