If there is a class that you want to see added (such as a post-AP class) contact your school now and submit a request.

Too late for next year. Courses are added by November.

I noticed a couple of changes in Computer Science

1. What used to be called Computer Science AB, is now called Data Structures.

2. What used to be called Computer Systems (which is taken AFTER Com Sci AB), is now called CS Capstone.

I think the advanced math class that followed Alg II Honors used to be called Trig/Precalc Hns. Now it seems to be called
AP Precalc."

I don't remember seeing that before.

There is still a class called "Trig precalc" but it is non-honors, and no extra weight.

Kind of wondering if AP Precalc is similar to AP ComSci Principals... where it is a course to gather students into that genre, but doesn't really have much substance or value. Seems to be a lot about modeling and seeing math in everyday life. Nothing about trig.

https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-precalculus/about-ap-precalculus

Quote: "Note: This course is not a prerequisite for and does not have to be followed by AP Calculus AB or BC." Yet, the FCPS description for AP Calc BC says that the prereq is "Precalculus with Trigonometry Honors or AP Precalculus or AP Calculus AB."

Precalc/Trig Hns is no longer offered. The College Board says that AP Precalc is NOT a prerequisite for AP Calc BC (or AB).

So, now, what is going to be the course that really prepares a student for AP Calc BC?

Some HS have removed the honors precalc/trig for those who don't want to do AP or IB. This happened at our HS and DD had to take IB otherwise take some lower level class. Fortunately it's working out.

OK, kind of answering my own question here based on the links College Board is providing. AP Precalc DOES include trig. Looks like there are three units that are part of the final AP exam.... and then there is a FOURTH unit that is optional (at the discretion of the school/district). The fourth unit is not on the exam, but it obviously allows for teachers to go into more topics that would prepare one for Calc BC (rather than AB). So, I guess, on the whole, this new AP course could be beneficial in giving kids a full 1.0 gpa bump (and college credit -- for some majors that will be sufficient, and for others it won't matter), compared to the old "Trig Precalc Hns" (which only gave a 0.5 bump).

I just skipped through this video and then actually watched the last 10 min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxoSw0CDciY

Some changes this coming year

AP Precalc is a new money grab by the college board. It'll likely be very similar to the previous option, with the addition that you can pay to have your kid take a test to see whether or not the his grades were inflated.

This really stinks. My child had planned on taking Pre Calc Trig HN next year( before this new catalog came out) They had already planned for other AP classes(not in Math). They are currently in Algebra 2 HN and doing fine(B+) with a struggle. Their Algebra 1 HN was all online due to pandemic so it’s been a lot of catch up. It won’t “ look” good ( to colleges) to see a drop from HN to regular on transcript. I know that this is necessary for some due to real struggle, but this seems forced for this who would have done fine-good in Pre Calc Trig HN. Pre Calc Trig HN is offered online but Algebra 1 HN online was horrible for actual learning.
Are kids going to just take the AP Pre Calc and “hope” it’s equivalent to Pre Calc Trig HN?

To 10:34....yes. I'm expecting AP precalc to be equivalent (not any harder) than trig/precalc hns. Don't overthink it. I'm sure they'll tell you as much during curriculum night presentations.
