Int fasting question

New to this..49 yr old female gaining weight rapidly.
Is IF just a tactic to eat less calories, stop eating late at night or is there an actual science to your body burning more fat, etc by eating this way?

It helped me cut back on night snacking. Also it can induce autophagy which is a cell renewal process.

Insulin rises as a hormonal response to eating, and increases substantially with higher carb foods. In order to burn fat, you can have more periods of not eating which would encourage lower insulin and more fat burning.

Of course, big picture, it absolutely matters how much you consume. Many people consume less if they are eating less frequently.

For me, insulin control was a big thing in terms of controlling hunger.

Your body will respond in the same way to the calories you consume whether you you eat 2000 calories in a 2 hr window or in a 18 hr window.

It does take advantage of the fact that hunger hormones are lower in the morning so skipping breakfast is easy. But if you then tack those calorie on later in the day you won't lose weight.

Look at it as "time restricted eating", which is actually an accurate description of this concept. BTW it works, but you have to be disciplined about when you open and close your eating widows.

There are so many cell benefits than just weight loss. I do it for cancer protection. Losing 30lbs is a plus.

The whole “autophagy” thing from fasting is likely bunk science and not real, but it’s not just calorie restriction. For those who have insulin issues, giving the body a break from making insulin is beneficial and contributes to the weight loss.

No scientific evidence of this. Here is some anecdotal. Did IF to protect from cancer. 5'6" went from 130ish to 115ish over a 3 yers of IF. Got cancer.

Sorry that happened to you. But why did it take you 3 years to lose 15lbs on IF? I lost 30lbs in 5 months doing IF? Just curious why it took that long. I fast for 20hrs plus, and do 24 hr fasts weekly. So not sure if you were only doing the bare minimum? Furthermore, there s proven research called called a Nobel Prize on Autophagy, and the benefits of cell renewal and it’s induced by intermittent fasting when you fast for 20hours up to 72hrs.

you lost weight faster than the other poster because you starved yourself/ate a lot less, I mean faster longer. Reduce calories more= faster rate of fat loss. Really not hard to figure out.

if I skip breakfast and you skip breakfast, lunch and don't eat at all one day a week of course you will lose weight faster.

it has nothing to do with how long you fast but rather now little you are eating.

This whole cancer discussion is ludicrous. Cancer is random, it happens to seemingly healthy people at all ages, with no hereditary link or other health issues. I practice IF but PLEASE for the love of god stop trying to imply that IF either helps prevent cancer OR that doesn't prevent cancer!
