Post after post today on my kid’s college parent page complaining their snowflakes had work due over the past holiday week. My own spent hours a day studying for a major test this past Saturday.
They were shocked I tell you! I think some of them will be calling their kid’s bosses when they have to take home work! |
| Don’t act like you’re so much better and chiller than these parents when you are also on these insane groups for helicopter parents too. |
| NP. I joined originally for some basic information when DC was a freshman. I stay for the entertainment. In my fb group someone is aghast that there’s a quiz on Monday, and someone else is upset that DD had a paper due Tuesday and had to work on it over Thanksgiving weekend. 🙄 |
Why on earth are you even in those Facebook groups? |
| People still use Facebook? |
| +1. Maybe it was grandparents complaining. |
DP. They are actually pretty handy for information that the school doesn't provide -- there are local parents on the page who are very helpful with recommendations for local doctors, car repair, birthday cookie delivery services, what nice hotels still have availability for parent's weekend, etc. As the parent of a freshman, it was useful for been-there tips around the first dorm move in. You do have to sift through a few hysterical posts from parents who are way too involved, but I just laugh and ignore it. The Facebook page I'm on has a very good moderator who is excellent at gently - but clearly -- telling parents that they need to have their kid contact xxx office about their issue. All in all, it's worth checking on every now and then. |
| They can be useful, but often annoying. For what it's worth my kid did NOTHING school related over Thanksgiving... |
That’s why there stock price is declining. |
| Both of my college kids had a fair amount of work over Thanksgiving. Admittedly, I was a little bummed. I don’t ever remember having work to do over Thanksgiving. I would never do anything about it, nor say anything to my kids, but was hoping to have them more available over the weekend. |
Don’t laugh. People ask if they their parents can’ come their new hire benefits orientation ALL THE TIME. We have a hard and fast rule of no parents allowed. |
Holy crap. That is absolutely nuts! |
Yes, because their mom’s got involved with their college homework assignments. In their defense, healthcare has gotten so very complicated with co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, and out of pocket maximums, but we tell them that it’s a growth opportunity and that they are welcome to share the presentation with parents if they need assistance making their elections. I don’t want to be heartless with them but if you haven’t already, you do really need to figure out how to do shit on your own after college. These are the same people who ask for a promotion 6 months in to their first job. |
| So? I was annoyed that my kid who came home for the entire week had multiple assignments in every class due the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and also had homework due the following week to stress about over the weekend. It was stressful for her and it limited our time together. As a professor, I had assignments due the Friday before break and I know many colleagues who also assigned work due a day or two before the holiday who won't grade over the weekend. Then again, I would've been annoyed if my kid had had everything due after the holiday break. I think it's fine that some parents are annoyed. Meanwhile, my husband is annoyed that we didn't get the following Monday off as well, because he and our kids love to watch NFL games on Sunday and he was sad to see them go before they could watch together. (My kids do report that many of their classes were half empty today anyhow, something to keep in mind for future breaks.) |
| As a parent to a first-year, I found it helpful to learn in advance from the parent group that my child would likely have a lot of work over Thanksgiving and that it might not be worth it for them to fly home. My DS wound up having a paper due Wednesday night and three projects due at the beginning of this week. |
