How important is brand recognition to you? How much do you spend on vegan leather vs. real leather?

Anonymous
I didn’t grow up with any items of luxury. As an adult I became friends with many women who were wealthy by various circumstances via my career field and gained a very close friend who is strictly against spending hundreds on less known brands with no “name” recognition.

1. How important is brand/name recognition to you?
2. Is a bag like this one of vegan leather worth its price? https://vonholzhausen.com/products/the-large-shopper-sand?variant=40613389107311

It’s PLEATHER, there, fixed it for you.

I wouldn’t spend that much money on a fake leather bag. I don’t care about brands, but this makes no sense - to me. You are literally paying for plastic! I have some canvas bags that are canvas on purpose.

I don’t care about brand recognition at all. I do care about buying high quality leather though. I purposely purchase lesser known brands (that are still expensive, but not as much as luxury) that put a lot of effort into sourcing the best leathers and stellar craftsmanship- not made in China.

Good leather wears so beautiful with time and use.

+1 Although I have to give the pleather PR credit here. In the 90s/2000s we all knew it was plastic and it was priced accordingly. Now it's vegan and people are paying a lot of money for it

I wouldn't spend that much, maybe if I used it every day. I care about fake leather as I'm vegetarian. I don't care about brands. That bag is cute.

Please don’t buy pleather. Buy real leather only. You can get affordable, handmade leather purses on Etsy, if you’re having difficulty finding affordable leather goods.

Pleather is being shoved down our throats, and I’m sick of it.

In the 90s/2000s, there was a Wilson’s Leather store in every mall. Anyone, even a person of modest means could easily buy leather bags, wallets, jackets, coats, skirts, pants, etc. I don’t know why we allowed brands to pump out all of this plastic garbage.

Please don’t buy fake leather aka plastic. That’s worse for animals since it destroys their environment. If you’re uncomfortable with new leather bags/shoes, buy vintage or canvas or some plant-based material.

I grew up poor but am rich now. I dont care about brand recognition although I avoid certain brands that carry a lot of cultural significance (eg, lululemon). I prefer real leather, it lasts a long time and feels supple.

Brand recognition is not important to me. I often buy items that will not be recognizable to others. But I only buy real leather. Just say no to faux leather.

same same same

I have been eyeing cactus leather bags and jackets. Fake leather is getting more innovative (and nicer). I don't spend that much on bags ever - it's just not in my budget - but that does look like a nice bag. I would want to see it before committing - or to make sure the store has a good return policy.

I hate to tell you but leather is also bad for the environment. Even canvas totes are bad for the environment. It's all bad for the environment, basically - pick your poison. Buying secondhand helps ameliorate, I think.

There are plant-based leathers now. Cactus is one. There's mushroom leather. It's still not everywhere, like plastic leather, but it's increasingly available.

I've never understood the "vegan leather" concept. Same for frankenfoods such as the "impossible burger" types of products. If you are truly Vegan then you shouldn't want anything that looks like leather or tastes like meat on or in your body. It's quite hypocritical - in my opinion.

And let me be the first to tell you that we don't care what you think! I'm glad you're not in charge of overseeing my food and fashion decisions.
