| What private high schools would you be interested in? Girls or co-ed is fine, looking to enter in 9th grade. DD is not into team sports but loves to bike, ski, kayak etc as a family, and does very well academically. We are wondering what options would be logistically feasible and if we should just move to MoCo instead. |
| GDS or Burke |
| Any of the schools in NW, throw your hat in the ring. |
| NCS. They have an outdoor program that offers that kind of activity. |
| If I had the kind of money for private, I would move to a neighborhood with better public schools and enroll there instead. |
Yes that's the classic dilemma, but we really like where we live because we can both walk to work, we love our house, with 1 kid don't need more space, moving is a hassle, etc. We are likely to relocate when DD is in college so would not want to buy a home now. |
| And thanks to everyone for your help. |
We did the same thing with 1 DD + stayed in DC. You could do several DC privates or Catholic. And, Potomac has a pickup bus as does Holton. |
| Where did you dd do elementary and middle? What did she like about it? And are application public schools an option? |
|
Just be sure to apply broadly OP.
If you are coming out of public, it's not easy to get a spot. I know a large number of DCPS A students who were shut out in both of the past 2 years. If your kid is a minority or a top athlete (on a team the school cares about) this will give you a boost. I would apply to 3-5 privates, a few Catholics and Walls/Banneker. Good luck! |
It's a private K-8, she likes the mix of real academics but not a ton of pressure and that organized sports are available but not a requirement. We will apply to Walls for sure, maybe McKinley but math and science are not really her passion although she does well. |
Thanks. Which Catholics would you recommend? |
| Np here, for Catholics try Seton, Archbishop Carroll, and maybe St. John's. The sports aspect of St. John's may make it a bad fit, but I'd look into it due to distance. |
Although they don’t have the outdoor offerings you mention, Burke otherwise seems like it might be a good fit. And it’s close to Rock Creek park! |
For Catholic Schools, my DD is a 9th grader was not into team sports previously - but loves the social element and has gone and cheered on her friends at soccer games, volleyball matches and football games so far this fall. Many St. John's kids take metro bus to school (or carpools form) What we have found (so far) is that the kids are happy. We know many stressed out kids at different schools and kids who are dealing with serious mental health issues due to bullying and "mean girl" dynamics. I know it is present -but our observations to date are that it is a more healthy balance. I would take a look - it was out DD's 1st choice and she turned down some more competitive schools. |
