My 6th grade DD (11, almost 12) just got her first period. She had a pretty big growth spurt 6 months leading up to it. She is now 5'2 in with a size 9 foot. Pediatrician said, yes most girls don't grow more than 2 inches or so after first period, but I'm a bit skeptical. DH is 6'3 and I am 5'7.... wondering if this was the case for others?

Someone has to be the shortest in the family. I don't recall how much I grew after my first period, but I'm 3 inches shorter than my mother and my younger sister. The only woman I'm related to who is shorter than me is my grandma.
The good news is I've lived my whole adult life at 5'2 with a size 8 foot, and I'm perfect just as I am. |
Most doesn’t mean all. My two daughters had to see an orthopedist for scoliosis. He was surprised by their x-rays because they had both gotten their periods, but their x-rays didn’t indicate it. Later, when an x-ray did indicate that one dd was almost done growing, she expressed disappointment that she was just shy of 5’4” and didn’t want to be shorter than average. The ortho told her she’d be lucky to eke out another 1/4”. She’s grown 1 1/4” since then. We have to keep scheduling follow up appointments for her scoliosis to be monitored because she hasn’t had 2 consecutive appointments with no growth like he requires to stop monitoring. |
Who knows. But if she is already 5’2” even if she doesn’t grow at all- that is still within a normal height for a woman. 5’4” is average, and she is likely to exceed that. |
Sounds right to me. I only grew half an inch. But yeah, your daughter could be an outlier. I wouldn't stress either way, though, that's a perfectly fine height for a girl. |
Im 5 7 hubby 6 2 and oldest got it at almost 11, was 4 11.5 and now is 5 3.5-done growing theycan grow 2 to 4 inches-thats typical |
2 inches is average but just from observation, the girls I know who got their periods earliest (before 12) seemed to have grown more than 2inches. My own daughter was over 13 and has grown about 1.5 inches and it’s been almost 2 years. Her feet haven’t grown since 6th grade either. |
I got my period when I was 11, almost 12, and grew 5 inches when I was 13. I'm 5'8". |
wow the shoe size seems quite large for her height. I'm guessing her feet have stopped growing, and she will grow into her feet, as DH likes to say. Size 9 is within "average" size range for female adults. |
OP I’m glad you started this thread because I was going to. My 5’0” not-even-10 y/o just got her first period. I’m 5’8. It’s so hard to imagine she might really be that much shorter than me! |
I'm glad you started this thread, too. My adopted daughter (for context...we don't know how tall her biological parents are) is already 5 71/2" and started her period about a year ago. I'm hoping she stops soon and was wondering how long afterwards girls typically stop growing. I looked up the average height for an Ethiopian woman and it's 5'6" so she's already surpassed the average.

I got my period in 5th grade and I grew from 5’3” to my adult height of 5’8” from the end of 5th to the beginning of 7th.
Weirdly I remember this because I had this favorite pair of CK Calvin Klein black jeans from the outlet mall and I remember going through 3 sizes in 1 school year. |
My daughter got her period at 12 and has grown 4 inches since then and still seems to be growing.
Our ped said NORMALLY they stop fully growing 2 years after first period. But always outliers, especially is period isn’t normal. |
She will grow - trust me |
Your pediatrician is correct. Signed, another pediatrician and mother of DD who grew at best 1” taller after period |
