Applications to how many colleges if applying ED?

Anonymous
Just curious. DC applied to 1 ED and 2 EA so far. If rejected from ED, will add 1-2 more RD (no EA at those schools) - so 4-5 total. But DC's friends seem to be applying to several more, even those applying to an ED. Ones not going ED are applying to more than 12 for the most part. Is this the general consensus in this area? We are at a pretty high-performing FCPS public and I was a little surprised as it seems like so much work for so many of these kids.

If applying to highly selective schools, especially private ones, definitely more. It’s so unpredictable. There’s more risk of being yield protected these days, too, from your safeties, which makes applying to more targets even more important. If you don’t get in ED, you’re in no better shoes (and maybe worse) than those not applying ED at all. But you want to do a good job on each application and any needed demonstrated interest, so don’t go overboard. Hopefully ED works out. Good luck!

Last year my DC applied to 8 total (1 ED and 7 EA).

1 ED target
1 EA reach
2 EA targets
3 EA safety
1 rolling

Unless the application fee is an issue, might as well have things done for other schools. It’s very hard to pick up and apply after a rejection or deferral.

Assume you won't get into ED and be surprised and pleased if you do.

Heed the advise of 22:15.

My kid had 1600 SAT, 4.0 gpa, 4.82 wGPA, 9 APs with 5s, bunch of impressive ECs, internships, NMS, job, written paper, national competitions etc. Asian-American male.

No school was a reach, and yet all schools were reaches.
Mainly because he applied to 6 schools in T-15 for CS. Thankfully, did not get into that one ED private school because it would have cost him $360K. We are full pay family. Got into a school he is very happy to be at. Got into 3 schools, got rejected by 3 schools. We were pretty much done in the first round.

Our child has applied:

ED 1 to a highly selective school.
EA to 5 others (2 targets, 3 safetys)

If they do not get into their ED 1 school, they have another school they will apply to for ED 2 that is a target school. Application is ready to go, just need to hear from ED 1, which will be in less than 5 weeks 😲🤞

Applied 1 ED and 1 EA so far.

One more EA coming up (since won't hear from ED till after this EA deadline. )

If rejected from ED, will apply 2 RD.

So, 5 total.

0 ED but 9 EA so far. He'd originally planned to also do 3 RD but he's not sure now.

Child will ED-1 to target/reach school (it's competitive).
If rejected, child will ED-2 to another target/reach school and RD at six other schools (child is going for a specific program that does not offer EA).

Maybe consider and ED2. It seems like most people who play the ED game plan and ED1 and 2 strategy.

It just totally depends on whether the schools on the list are targets or safeties. You don't need to apply to a lot if your kid is definitely getting accepted, you need more if these are all T20 schools.

My DS is applying
0 ED
5 EA (2 reaches, 3 targets)
and 3 rolling admission safeties

1 ED
1 EA
12 RD

Very few EA available on her list. 4 of the RD schools are state schools with earlier deadlines that will be here in under 3 weeks.
