Moving - what if I just don’t update my address?

Anonymous
Theoretically speaking, what if I were to move to an adjacent neighborhood in MoCo, one literally two blocks from where I live now but in another school’s boundary. I know technically, my kids switch schools. What if I don’t update my address?

How would you do that? Don't you need to tell MVA? Taxes? other bills?

Sure. But the school isn’t alerted about that. Kids are already enrolled at the school.

It’s totally fine. Most of the communication from MCPS is via email anyway now. So, you won’t miss out on any snail mail like it was in the old days.

And MCPS is full of people living at an ‘alternate’ address than where they actually live. Schools don’t have the time/staff/money to investigate residency fraud, so it goes unchecked.

Once you are in a cluster, you will never again be required to provide proof of residence. It’s a total non-issue.

Not true. I’ve been in the same cluster since 1998. I’ve been asked for proof of residence at least twice for each child and thrice for my eldest.

Strange. I have three, oldest now in college. I think I had to provide proof of address when each enrolled initially and I don't think ever again. Certainly not within the same school (i.e., if the kid is in HS, the HS won't ask again).

I have no idea if they check but are you talking about elementary or high school? If it’s just for a couple of years and you would go to the same middle/high school anyway, then I would think it would be NBD and unlikely to create issues, but probably not worth the risk of getting caught if it’s an altogether different cluster. Personally, I wouldn’t take the risk, but then again, I wouldn’t commit any other kind of fraud either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Really? Thrice for your eldest?

Interesting because I've had kids in MCPS since 2009 and other than the initial elementary school enrollment for K never asked for any proof of anything.

Interesting. Virginia requires proof of address every year.

Just registered my kid for winter sports in MCPS and they automatically checked that our address is in bounds for that school.

How does that work for kids with COSAs?

Same for me. Nobody asked when my kid entered MS or HS. They automatically enrolled them in the next school.

Which cluster is that? Our cluster does not check after initial enrollment.

Blair is our home school. I’ve had kids at TPES, PBES, TPMS, Blair, and Northwood.

Nobody will check. As long as you can drive your kid and don’t need the bus, it won’t be an issue.
