New Virginia social studies standards

The revised social studies standards have come out. The WaPo article, which is uncomplimentary and vague, includes a link to the document and I read the first part of it, the K-6 standards, it seems to make a bit more sense than the current standards but I'm not an educator so there might be a lot that I'm missing.

I teach U.S. part 1 and I was not aware of this draft, so thanks for bringing it to my attention! I'm not a Glen Youngkin fan, so I was dreading what I would find, but actually, based on a skim of my content area, I don't really have a problem with these standards. They are more or less the same as before, with a few additions and deletions. I actually think they are more general in many ways than the current standards are written. Some of the more random facts have been removed in favor of more broader statements that allow the teacher more flexibility, though that was probably not what was intended. Unless I missed something significant, I am fine with teaching this.

I have only taught 4th and 5th grades. I’d have to do a side by side of the 4th grade standards but it looks similar- VA Studies. However 5th is completely different. We have been doing world history and that is not even in the standards- it would now be early American history, some of which would be redundant with VA Studied the year before.

In the past most districts have chosen whether to do U.S. part 1 in 5th or 6th grade, and then part 2 the following year. I think most school districts in NoVa do it in 6th. But yeah, if they move it 5th for everyone, that would be a huge change.

I realize this is somewhat off topic, but when/how does VA (specifically APS) teach the Holocaust? My kids religious school teaches it at the same time as DCPS, so just wondering if my kids will learn it first at school or temple.

Putting US History I in 5th and II in 6th means that in some districts, I will be taught in ES and II in MS.

7th grade

I don’t think so (any more). My current APS 8th grader had US History in 6th, civics/Econ in 7th, & now world geography in 8th. I think 9th will be world history.

It's possible first encounter will be via English course. I'm not speaking for APS, but nationwide many teachers assign Diary of Ann Frank in middle school.

Pp who asked about the Holocaust, I was wondering if 6th graders learned about it as part of US history (WWII and all). I guess not?

Does this change anything for 9-12?

It’s in the USII curriculum, which is either 6th or 7th grade, depending on the district.

Native Americans (currently grade 2) and Ancient China (currently grade 3) completely removed from elementary school.

Kind of scary.

American Indians are in K, 4th and 5th grade in these revised standards.

There's also no Mali.

I'm not super woke but the way they taught native Americans was so disturbing to me I'd prefer they not teach it at all. The stuff I heard during zoom school led to a lot of dinner table conversations!
