Subject: If you are giving away furniture, who pays for moving bill?

We are remodeling and asked a friend if they wanted some furniture. Friend accepted and we coordinated a time that was good for us both. The furniture was delivered and the movers said the friend did not pay them.

Am I wrong to think that the friend should be paying this bill?

Should we split it?

I just want some perspective.

Typically the person accepting the furniture arranges moving that works for them. It’s very unusual for the giver to hire movers. Were they already on the clock with you for the day? Did they simply not ask your friend for payment, since you’re the one who hired them?

The person who is getting the furniture should pay. But given that you would have had to hire junk haulers anyway it’s not totally unfair. Did the recipient agree to the movers?

The friend wanted to hire a mover and ask Dh and our other mutual friends to help him move the furniture. We are all busy with kids and said he should hire a mover. I gave him our mover’s info.

Sorry, I meant wanted to rent a uhaul and ask Dh and other mutual friends for help moving.

They should pay if they arranged it. The mover should have given them a price and discussed it upfront.

Just saw the update. Since the friend arranged it with the movers, and since you told the friend to “hire” a mover, it’s on the friend to pay. I’m surprised that the moving company didn’t get a credit card or deposit from your friend when they arranged it.

+1 this is a weird story. Why would a moving company assume a client who referred them to a new client was going to pay it? Sorta think OP called the mover herself and is hiding the ball on that.

The mover is an acquaintance of ours. I am not hiding anything.

So ask your acquaintance why they didn’t collect a payment from their client. Absolutely bizarre to come with their hand out to you, if you truly simply gave your friend a referral.

I've always done it as: We have XYZ. If you'd like any of it, come and get it. Then they know they are on the hook for moving the "free" furniture.

In this case, given that it's already done, I'd just pay it since the person clearly doesn't have the money to pay more than for getting friends and a UHaul.
