Philly marathon?

Wondering if anyone here is running the Philly marathon this year, or has run it in the past? I’m 50 years old and this will be my first marathon. Am nervous! I’ve completed two 18 mile runs. The first was horrible but I think I started off too fast and didn’t hydrate well. The second went much better. 20 miles next week and the taper. Can I really do the entire marathon? Just looking for support and community and thought I would try here. Any tips or words of encouragement welcome!!

And to anyone who was just curious and landed on this page, if you need running encouragement, you can do it at whatever distance you are trying to achieve! Running has done some amazing things for me emotionally as well as physically. Listen to your own body and know when to take it easy. As I’ve read - and it’s true - every run is different and that’s ok!

I haven't run Philly, but if you do the long runs (and you are!), you are totally going to do the whole marathon! Get it, OP!

I find it helpful to run with a pace group for the first half to keep myself from going out too quickly. Don't try anything new the day of the race, pack an extra gel or whatever else you use in case you drop one and have a plan for your fuelling based on what you did in your long runs. Soak up every minute of it and view it as a victory lap for all the hard work - no matter what, finishing will be a PR and is a huge accomplishment.

I ran Philly years ago. IIRC it’s a fairly flat course. If you pace yourself well, I think you can finish it. Good Luck OP!

If you can get through the 20 mile long run, you can get through the marathon. Two suggestions - make sure you're eating enough during your run, particularly in the early miles. If you're feeling crappy, it's probably nutrition, not hydration. And make sure you don't go out too hard for the first half.

You’re amazing! If you can run 20, you can hobble through 26. I hope the energy is great and you have a wonderful race.

I have run three marathons and other than race days I have never run further than 20 miles! I think for one of the races I didn’t train further than an 18 miler.

Can can definitely do this!! Good luck and have fun!

You are good to go since it sounds like you’ve been doing long runs. 18 and 20 will get you to 26.2 after taper and carbo loading. The crowds and race day adrenaline will also help. Don’t start out too fast though. Wear a gpa watch that measures your pace and keep an eye on it. It is so easy to run 1-2 minutes faster than you should simply because of race day adrenaline and following every one else. You won’t even realize it until it’s too late. You’ll feel like you’re in slow motion if you keep to your target pace, but believe me, 10 miles in it will not feel like slow motion anymore.

Windy day for the Philly Marathon! Run strong OP and remember to tell us how it went! It’s super cool that you are doing this at 50.

How was it? I did the Philly marathon about ten years ago and had a great time! Yesterday was super cold and windy though! How did you do, OP?
