Our freshman is not happy where she/he decided to go. Decision was based on better ranking school than others. We are looking to transferring to UVA. Our child did get into UVA but decided not to go there. Anyone else did the same. Any suggestions are welcome. Any recommendations on counselor who can help us navigate.
For parents of seniors let your kid decide from heart not the ranking. Our child’s heart wanted to go to UVA but went to top 5 schools based in rankings. |
If they want to transfer to UVA by all means let them do it. For one thing, it’s cheaper. I had a good friend whose kid did exactly that - started at an elite private because the parents pushed it even though the kid wanted UVA, so she transferred. Done. |
| I transferred back to my in-state school. I don't think there's much to navigate. Just have your kid submit the application and get a transcript from current school. It's much easier to get in as a transfer assuming grades at current school are solid. Good luck! |
There are lots of students from FCPS that did not get into UVA that transfer in second year. Go for it! |
I assume that the top 5 school he or she is attending is an LAC. Why does your daughter / son want to transfer ? |

It’s common now to transfer or start Spring of Freshman year.
Just apply and move on. |
| Nothing wrong with transferring to UVA And it’s not like it’s a crap state u. It’s one of the best state schools. |
| I know several FCPS kids that went to University of Vermont for one year and transferred into UVA for second year no problem. They did not have the stats to get into UVA straight out of high school. I know other local kids that went to Boston University, University of South Carolina and Syracuse and transferred into UVA second year. Very common. |
Many if us have been saying choose based upon fit. I wish more people would put ranking in perspective. |
Put ranking into perspective but make sure kid wants to go there. Our child had doubts and once started looking at the rankings got persuaded by it. Op here. Our child did get into UVA but choose not to go and now wants to transfer. Hopefully UVA doesn’t take it this into consideration. We are very stressed along with our child. Suddenly when as a parent you get a text that guys I have tried and I am not happy here the college rankings doesn’t matter. |
I know its stressful OP but the UVA admissions officers are not going to hold a grudge because your DC chose another school. Just have them continue to keep their grades up, and apply to transfer. Sorry that your DC is going through this, but people do transfer into UVA all the time and I'm sure if they will be happy to have them so long as the grades are where they'd expect. |
| Unfortunately sometimes you have to learn a school is a bad fit by actually going there. That's how it was for me. It's no big deal, life goes on. The good news is UVA has a 40% transfer admission acceptance rate. |
| OP this is nothing to stress about about. Happens all the time. UVA isn’t going to care in the slightest. If anything, having been accepted a year ago will only help. |

| How do you apply to transfer for spring semester? Transfer applications seem to be designed to apply for the following year. Do you just call the school? |
