ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Yes! 100%
I mean honestly what is the argument for waiting until 26/27? I've talked to our board members and implementation & logistically making the switch could be done in a matter of days for the club. If that's not possible then your club needs a new director.
Why put the "paying" parents & kids though a year of politics and division knowing the teams are going to be separated in a year.
Playing time, recruiting q3 & q4 kids from other clubs during season ect. There should never be a wasted year in our kids development, but feel in 25/26, private training/small sided tournaments/ODP and just wait until 26/27 with no club, might be the best bang for your buck in a lame duck year if no changes are made next Fall.

Next year should be interesting 😳

What effects will a lame duck year have on teams and players? Currently my kid is the only Q3/4 kid on her ECNL team. What will next year look like for her?

And it’s more sept+q4 … so even fewer kids with the potential to change

If the kid is Sept 1 or later, everyone will know s/he won’t be on the team next year - and will start getting ignored. If the coach does that, it’s a huge problem. That’s why there needs to be a transition plan at the very least.

That's not a given. Players can STILL play up and are more likely to at the highest levels. That said, chances are the sept/Q4 player might also shine more at the younger ages they join.

Oh, come on now with this sky is falling stuff. The reality is politics and division ALREADY exist in spades within youth soccer. It's ALREADY hyper competitive. Playing time, recruiting, at al already happens to the nth degree.

If you really want change now, convince your club to make the changes and play up in the BY system.

The transition plan is you parent to step up and look for the best opportunities for your kid. Chances are there will be some. Stop waiting for someone to hand you something. Other parents will be wishing they had that opportunity.

I can’t see any coach doing this. Any Q4 kid already on a top team is a star. Ignoring them makes no sense, they’re a valuable part of their current team and if you move them down an age group they’ll be even more valuable.

Totally agree. The idea of waiting 18 months to change to school year teams is absurd. Guessing next season (25/26) there will be plenty of "school year" opportunities for the Q4 kids.

It will be difficult long-term for other leagues to not go to 9/1.

If all teams at the younger ages are using 9/1 (basically everyone since they are either in USYS or US Club), it doesn't make a lot of sense to then jump to birth year at the older age groups in leagues like MLS Next. That seems like a bit of a nightmare for club operators.

It may make sense in the short term ... Right now, there's a glut of highly-experienced players at Q1/Q2. If they feel shutout as SY leagues look to recruit the best sept/Q4 players, they might coalesce with any league that stays BY. On top of that, they can assert themselves as the top league linked with the international standard/pro pathway -- which is definitely true with MLS Next. GA might try that in its competition with ECNL. Then again, maybe it's only the very top. We shall see. The ball is in MLS Next/GA's court, because US Club/USYS/AYSO's announcement this week gives even more certainty to their position. People will start to make decisions based on that if they remain up in the air, it may put them at a disadvantage.

At our club, I've seen more age group mixing in the past 6 months than the past 5 years.

I think MLS Next Tier 1 (mainly Academy clubs) will remain BY.

However MLS Next Tier 2 could be SY.

Let's see ...
