Why is Homecoming such a Big Deal?

Anonymous
I never went to homecoming. Only proms.

DS decided not to go this year because he went to his cousin's birthday party instead. He didn't seem as bothered by the whole thing until some friends pestered him about how he missed out on a "memorable and important" event? One went as far as insisting he lost a part of his childhood for not going.

Is homecoming really that important in HS? I don't get it.

My kids, who didn’t go to a lot of things, all went to homecoming. The school does a spirit week and ends the week with a football game on Friday and a dance on Saturday. They love it.

Some kids love it, some hate it.

It depends what part of the country you live in. I grew up in nY, and don’t even think we had homecoming. Spirit week was just for seniors.

Growing up, I liked spirit week but hated the football. So I never bothered to go to any games.

The girls are often more interested in the homecoming dance. A chance to dress up. The boy’s consider a sport coat to be painful 😬

It’s like prom lite. The dance itself is not a that big a deal but the build up can be(the dress, some kids getting really into the promprosal style invites, ALL the picture taking). And I think at most high schools everyone can go unlike prom which may just be for juniors and seniors.

My kid doesn’t really care either (also a boy).

Feels like the girls care more about it? I never went to homecoming either and it was NBD.

My son is a freshman. It was a big deal for him and his friends because it was the first time they asked a date. They had a great time. I think it’s really made them feel like high schoolers.

Do you live in Texas? Homecoming is a huge event there. In some parts of the country it's less of a big deal.

No, it's a new thing, not regional. Homecoming was not a big deal at my school 30 years ago, but it is for my HS daughters who are attending the same school I did. I blame social media. Anything that could be a good photo op is now popular.

School spirit
Fun

The main difference between Prom and Homecoming was that H-Co was open to the entire school. Prom was only for juniors/seniors. So it was a fun dance you could go to in 9th and 10th grade, without being invited by an older student.

Totally agree with this.
