Joined gym, attended classes - can I keep going with an aggravated plantar fascia

Anonymous
I used to exercise, I think the sudden exhuberance for classes and wrong footwear for the zumba class left me with plantar fasciitis in my left foot.

I really want to lose 40lbs. Generally I enjoy being active, activity wasn't new (ran, walked, did weights, body resistance, elliptical, hiking etc before).

My shoes are new and the same kind I always use (I switched shoes 5 years ago which aggravated my other foot).

Do I have to stop exercising to let it heal? I've been trying to avoid running, walking, zumba of course for the last few weeks. It's not getting worse but not really better either. Thoughts?

Try to strengthen your calves and glutes, that helped with my PF. Calf raises, clamshells (preferably with a band) and glute bridges go a long way.

Try aqua/pool classes

Get in touch with an orthopedist. They can give you a cortisone shot. Staying off my foot wasn't enough, I needed the shot to get past the PF.

Manual physical therapist for your plantar fasciitis, which is caused by a problem in your calves.

Lots of stretching and wearing good shoes 24/7 (asics, for me) got rid of my p.f. It took months, but with good habits, it's now stayed away for years. I would keep exercising through it, if you at all can, because it will warm up your muscles for stretching and help you lose weight, both of which should help.

I had plantar fasciitis. Dry needling my calf and heel is what finally got rid of it. I was contemplating surgery it was so bad. I did stop running and switched to peloton. I could bike without really making the PF worse, whereas if I ran, I’d be sore for days.

I tried Acupuncture which totally worked. It was going on 9 months with pain.

I increased my swimming and biking when it was bad. If I did anything higher impact on it, it wasn't getting better.

Do you stretch before class?

I stretch before I do anything, and that plus new shoes and OTC insoles (got mine at Fleet Feet) has completely changed things. Down dog is amazing for getting deep in the legs. Also dropping heels off a step one at a time for a count of ten, and then alternative the stretch with 10 heel raises (also off the step). Also maybe try rolling a frozen water bottle under each foot to sooth if they feel inflamed! Feels like heaven and massage at the same time.

OP here, thanks so much everyone, appreciate all the advice and have integrated pretty much all of it. My foot is doing better already. Thanks again.
