Morning! We are hosting a casual backyard BBQ dinner for our son’s soccer team next week and I’d love your thoughts on the planned menu.
Background: *20 adults *10 kids (8-10yo) and a couple younger siblings *One person with gluten sensitivity *No other allergies, food restrictions, vegetarians etc. Menu: *BBQ chicken drumsticks *Grilled chicken breasts (GF, made on separate sanitized grill) *Bratwursts and hotdogs (GF) (with regular and GF buns) *Baked beans (GF) *Steamed broccoli (GF) *Homemade macaroni and cheese *Annie’s macaroni and cheese (because we all know some kids will only eat boxed) *French fries (GF) (for kids) *Orzo vegetable salad *Green salad (GF with GF dressing option) *Sliced watermelon *Chocolate chip cookies *Brownies (GF) *Beer, wine, hard seltzer, soda, water, juice boxes, milk boxes etc. A few guests are bringing a dessert of their choose too. Does it seem like a good balance, particularly with the gluten-free options in mind? I would love to pare down on a side or two but I’m not really sure where to make that cut so I can easily keep the menu as is. Would love any input on any substitutions or changes you might make. Very lucky that except for the one person who has a sensitivity to gluten, there are no other dietary restrictions to work around. Crazy to find that with such a large group! Thanks in advance. |

My thoughts:
While it’s nice you’re providing gluten-free options, I don’t think you need that many for one person. You’re menu seems a little hoity-toity for a BBQ, and some of the options don’t fit the theme (steamed broccoli?) You’ve got 2 kinds of chicken, 2 kinds of sausages, but no hamburgers? Here’s what I’d suggest Hamburgers Hotdogs Chips instead of fries Baked Beans Green Salad Orzo Salad - nice option, not really necessary If you want to throw in macaroni and cheese, only make one kind - it’s just a starch. If kids don’t like it they have buns and fried/chips. Frankly, I’d skip it altogether If you really need more produce (which I don’t think you do), substitute grapes or another salad for the broccoli Watermelon Brownies/Cookies - optional since guests are bringing dessert and you’ve got watermelon. 1) this is not a BBQ, it's a weird cookout/dinner party hybrid
2) steamed broccoli, orzo salad, and french fries are not necessary and in fact strange additions to the menu. The mac & cheese is enough carbs. Make a lot of green salad and skip the broccoli. You're also missing coleslaw. |
| why so much GF emphasis for 1 person |
| nix the broccoli for baked beans. |
I like this menu, though I also think it’s fine to skip burgers and keep hotdogs and/or brats and chicken breasts. Definitely no need for chicken drumsticks (which are unlikely to be popular), fries, or two kinds of mac&cheese. |
| Looks good. Skip the fries. You could do potato chips if you want but you don’t need to. Broccoli is unnecessary if you have the salad. Don’t make everyone eat GF brownies. Either make them regular, skip them, or do ice cream, which is GF. No one needs milk boxes at a BBQ. |
Beer, wine, & hard seltzer is inappropriate for this age group. |
| Yeesh you guys are harsh. OP, I think the menu looks great, and agree maybe toss out the broccoli? The rest sounds delicious. If you have room on your grill maybe corn? But also unnecessary. As somebody who is gluten free because of celiac‘s, I appreciate you making accommodations! Also, ignore the PP who says that alcohol is inappropriate. There will be more adults than kids and obviously kids aren’t going to drink alcohol but adults will/may. And yes, I would keep milk and juice boxes since it sounds like there will be some younger siblings. Good, thoughtful menu. I’d like to come! |

Menu:
*BBQ chicken drumsticks ---hamburgers or BBQ pork would be a better option *Grilled chicken breasts (GF, made on separate sanitized grill) *hotdogs (GF) --- cancel Bratwursts and GF buns *Baked beans (GF) *Steamed broccoli (GF) *Homemade macaroni and cheese *Annie’s macaroni and cheese (because we all know some kids will only eat boxed) ----cancel, that kid can eat other things. *French fries (GF) (for kids) ------various chips instead of FF *Orzo vegetable salad -----either Orzo or the Green Salad *Green salad (GF with GF dressing option) -----either Orzo or the Green Salad *Sliced watermelon *Chocolate chip cookies *Brownies (GF) ---cancel, doubt GF would be as good as standard, GF person can bring their own or eat watermelon *Beer, wine, hard seltzer, soda, water, juice boxes, milk boxes etc. |

I love the menu. I would get rid of the broccoli, French fries and Annie’s Mac and cheese (keep the homemade). Add chips and dip and you are good to go! I don’t think you need hamburgers. Bratwurst would also be an easy cut but it’s probably not much work to keep them.
And ignore PP - there are adults at this party so beer, wine and hard seltzer is expected. |
| It sounds delicious but if it were me hosting this kind of crowd, I'd way simplify. Burgers and dogs, baked beans, slaw, mac and cheese, watermelon, brownies. |
| Skip fried, add potato salad |

Overall it sounds like a fine menu. You are giving people plenty of choices.
Personally, I would drop the box macaroni and cheese. Those kids can eat your homemade mac & cheese. I’m might drop the bratwurst and just do hotdogs, even though I personally love bratwurst. It might just be easier for you in the long run. I would also have a beef option, maybe instead of the grilled chicken breasts If you didn’t make a single change in your menu, it would also be just fine. |

It’s a nice menu, but as pps mentioned, there are too many items that don’t necessarily add much.
- French fries will be cold and soggy in 10 minutes, so might as well skip them. - One type of Mac and cheese is plenty. - Chicken: Stick to 1 type, either breasts or drumsticks. personally, I prefer thighs. - Skip broccoli. I’d add corn or a dip like hummus. |
