ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Is there any other confirmation, report, tweet, etc. other than this one person/account? Why isn’t that tweet getting any traction if it’s true? A lot of jumping to conclusions.

Good question. Anybody has the answer?

💯 Only path now is to advocate for these kids through actionable steps. My recommendation - reach out repeatedly by email to leadership of all these orgs - US Club Soccer, ECNL, USYS, AYSO - and push for a solution for the August kids. One benefit of the long transition to fall 2026 rollout is there is time for them to account for this oversight if they get feedback that there is a sizable push for it.

That was tried in 2016. Didn’t work. The ship has sailed, brother.

I hear that, but this is a different ballgame. The move to birth year divided up the grades into two groups (7 months of one grade and 5 of another). Sure it also impacted where kids fall on the older to younger range of the registration year, as happens with any 12-month range. But it didn’t strand one single month of kids in a given grade alone on an island.

How are Aug kids stranded?

They have to play with the grade above them while the rest of their grade/classmates play together. With an 8/1 cutoff like they had for SY pre-2017, these kids could play with their grade. With BY, they have 5 months of kids in their grade (August - December). Now it’s just August - one single month of kids that can’t play with their grade (unless there is a waiver for these kids to play with their actual grade with proof of enrollment)

I was at the meeting. MLS NEXT will be SY, only MLS academy and National Team will be BY.

So GY for just August seems interesting

then for the 2026/2027 season she will still play U18/19. but if she is Aug birthdate that means she will get a third year in U18/U19 for the 2027/2028 season?

am I reading this correctly?

Your daughter will be in college for the 2027/2028 season.

When can we get the format release and transition plan for each league?

You’re taking about a kid that was held back, right? I’m not sympathetic. They will be playing with the kids that should be in their grade.

From the websites of those leagues - after they’ve had the chance to draft those releases and put them on their websites.

Not necessarily- some states have an 8/1 cut off. Those kids weren’t held back.

“I was at the meeting” guy, the whole ecosystem is going SY except MLS Academy and National Teams?

It's either great info OR just wishful thinking.

So all we know right now it seems is US Club, USYS, AOYS are going SY and no registration change till 26/27. We do not know what leagues are going to do as far as any transition in 25/26.
I thought they were going to put out a website with direction from US Soccer after that I assume leagues will follow?
