Exercise to replace swimming for the fall/winter?

Anonymous
I’ve been swimming laps daily all spring/summer, but the pool closes tomorrow. I’m not a huge fan of indoor pools and the logistics of lockers/parking/etc. (can walk to the outdoor pool, indoor pool requires a drive and meters with short allowable parking times that wouldn’t let me get my full work out in anyway).

I need a new low impact activity as I’ve got plantar fasciitis in one foot which has taken me out of running for a couple months now and was my primary get in shape exercise previously.

There are several studios I can walk to from my house. Pure barre, orange theory, solid core, boot camp, and a few gyms. Would any of these be viable? I’ve never been to any of them and don’t know much about their programs other than I know what a basic gym is.

I’ve recently lost 35lbs and am working toward more and am looking for toning and low stress on my foot. Seems like a big ask!

Orange theory includes running on a tread.

What about cycle var? Woukd that hurt your foot?

I would recommend Barre3 over pure barre if you want cardio.

Any of them could be viable, OP, depending on what you like. Orange Theory has modifications for tread work, at least, some of them do. Solidcore is hard AF, but I loved it pre-pandemic. A lot of people like barre and boot camps. Why not try them out and see what you like?

I love barre classes because of the core strength and hip mobility. It worked better than PT for solving a lower back problem I was having. I haven’t tried Pure Barre but I love Xtend Barre, which is now available online with an on demand Beachbody subscription. I’ve actually had the subscription since the pandemic started and I wanted to avoid gyms, but I’ve liked it enough to keep (along with running and occasional drop in classes).

I have the same question—and similar issues — OP. I’m planning to explore dance videos, which can be as low impact as you want them to be, and to get back into yoga and possibly tai chi.

Spinning worked for me when I had more foot problems. Remember that barre classes typically require you to be barefoot. I need shoe support.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

I think I will go by the various places and take them up on the free trial class offers and see what, if anything, is easiest on my foot.

A new gym is supposed to open near me with an indoor lap pool, but that is probably a year out, but will be a great option when it does open. Walkable is important to me given the parking situation in the city!

Go see a PT who will work on your calf and resolve your plantar fasciitis. Then you can do whatever classes you like best after the free trials

What about getting a Peloton? Cycling is very low impact.

DH and I swim, but are currently shopping for a rower to get us through winter. We both already enjoy rowing, so hoping for the best once we have one in-home
