ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Q1? The kids really getting screwed are the older August birthdays.

Any update on what happens to the trapped 8th graders next year. Assuming they will just play u15 for a second season after no spring season.

Have people asked prior to signing as a trapped kid what the clubs plan to do?

If 9-1 is true, that is disappointing… 8-1 covered all kids in that grade … 9-1 doesn’t

Does this mean mls next is going school year too?

I would assume MLS next and GA stay BY

I would love to hear these governing bodies articulate why they think 9/1 is the answer to getting virtually all kids in a grade playing together. Relying on the stat that a majority of states having 9/1 school cutoffs doesn’t achieve it for all the reasons discussed in recent posts on this forum.

Perhaps some form of waiver system so August kids can play with their grade will get rolled out if enough families push for it in the coming months. Surely clubs don’t want to deal with the hassle of stray August kids on the wrong grade team and accommodations for them still being trapped. Better to completely fix the problem. And only results in at most a 13-month age range on a team instead of 12.

Aug. parents are now desperate. The best ECNL can do is have a waiver for GY in showcase. The reason is simple: if an Aug. player can not play as the youngest in its own age group, there is little chance for college recruiting. ECNL will not make a mess for this kind of group. It is just not worthy the effort.

Parent of a trapped kid going into 8th grade next year, this sucks.

It wucks because it’s not fixed for 25? Or it sucks because you want to stay on your current BY team?

You make no sense. They “made a mess” for these same August kids who have been trapped in BY structure (and September to December also)

It’s shocking that U.S. Youth Soccer and AYSO also went with 9/1 as they have more of the entry level players in their orbit. Think about the August kids as preschool and young elementary kids entering the sport and now being told go find a team a grade above to play with instead of your own classmates/friends.

I'm sorry. I hope you find a good option for your kid.. Realize even under the current system there maybe some and there are not always all bad. Some clubs offer good options during that season, either with a team of trapped player and/or perhaps the team below. Also, you have time to perhaps go with a club that offers a year-round program.

Sucks because it isn't fixed for fall 25
