Since Covid I have gotten into the habit of watching way too much TV. Does anyone have tips on how to cut back or quit? It is so easy to turn it on when I am tired and hard to turn it off again. Late evenings and Saturday’s are the worst. I have it on all day Saturday around errands and chores. It isn’t something I ever thought I would do. After the work week it is a day when I am low on energy and just trying to get through my at home to do list. |
Go to the library and start reading.
Find some podcasts you like and start replacing podcasts with tv. Listen to music instead. Become comfortable with silence. Call a friend or relative before watching tv. |
Cancel cable and all your streaming services. |
If you don't want it on in the background while you do other stuff, try audiobooks.
Be intentional with your viewing. There is a lot of great TV. Instead of trying to give it up altogether, try to decide ahead of time what good quality shows you want to watch, and then do that. |
I have the same problem! I'm almost sick of it. But not quite. I suggest continuing to watch until you're done. |
Work in television! I spent 20 years in production and can’t stand the box. Seriously / volunteer to be a PA on a reality show and you will see behind the curtain a little bit. Bread and circus. |
It's how you mentally decompress and recharge yourself .
Some people are emotional eaters , some people are shopaholic, and some of us watch TV as a form of escapism. A bit of a coping mechanism . To boot, there's a show/genre for whatever your age and mood at the touch of your finger 24/7. If you quit TV, can pivot to something else? Do you even need TV as often as you describe? Maybe save the TV for evening only. |
Play music |
This, far less stationary. You can also listen to talk radio - BBC world service etc |
If your streaming turn off auto play and set app limits in downtime |
I don't see the problem OP. You're using it to decompress and/or distract you. It's just not that big of an issue. |
Can you walk on the treadmill and watch a show? I love doing that. It’s not really exercise but I really enjoy it. |
People who don’t watch tv sit on their phones. Replace tv with whatever you want to entertain you like a book. |
Not OP, but this sounds really cool; how do you do that? |
