Anything is possible, but realistically this School Board is not inclined to create more competitive magnet schools. The Democrats don't have the courage to do away with TJ, but they sure as hell don't want to replicate it. |

I wouldn't mind a second TJ, there is more than enough interest and having one in this part of the County would reduce the commute time for a lot of kids. It isn't going to happen. First, here is a need for a HS to relieve the schools in the Western part of the county. Second, TJ has caused everyone more than enough headaches, they are not going down that path again. And finally, TJ is what it is because of specialized labs and programs that are costly, which I don't see FCPS paying for. T
If there is an aviation program, it will be an academy. Not knowing the full lay out of the KAA campus, I have read that there is the main building and two office buildings. Maybe one of the office buildings is converted into a space for an aviation academy with dedicated classrooms for the program. I can see some of the School Board being stupid enough to suggest something else for KAA but the majority of the School Board should be able to read the room and realize what buying this building without public discussion and not using it for the Western HS will mean for their political careers. |

The only place i have heard anyone mention an aviation acadmey is on here.
No one wants their kids taking flight attendant or baggage handler classes. |
I would guess it would be more mechanics, pilots, and air traffic control type functions. I could easily see a plane mechanics type class and even intro classes need for flying smaller planes. I know very little about air traffic control, that might be out of the reach of a HS program. Mechanics in the military tend to be enlisted, so I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that there are airplane specific classes on engine maintenance that could be taught. I am not saying I want to see it, just thinking about what it would entail. |
| I suspect the people pushing a magnet school do not want the relief for the nearby community. They still think it is "insurance" to protect others from a move. |
Another TJ would be very welcomed for a lot of families. I don’t think it would hurt political careers for that to go through. Sure, maybe Dixit loses some votes but not nearly enough to lose that seat, and again, another TJ would be politically popular for most of the county. |
Gee. I wonder what neighborhood this poster lives in? |
I live in Fox Mill and think a TJ2 is needed for the County. I don't think it belongs at KAA but I can see a decent number of parents who have kids at Carson who would welcome a STEM school in the area. Carson has well over 200 kids a year apply for TJ and around 50 a year attending TJ. Having a STEM academy that didn't require a long commute wouldn't be awful. It is not what is needed at the KAA location but I can see where a decent number of parents in the Western area would be supportive of a STEM school in the area. There will be some who would hate the idea because they want TJ for prestige purposes and would be disappointed if their kid went to TJ 2 but I think plenty of families would be interested. Just to be clear, I don't see KAA as the building for that. I think KAA needs to be the new Western High School. I do hope that Fox Mill moves there because I don't like IB and would love to not need to pupil place for an AP program. The families who like IB have SLHS nearby and there will be room for the kids in the IB program. |
| The money set aside in the CIP has always been for a western HS to relieve capacity issues in this part of the county so they don't have to keep rezoning kids over and over every decade. Opening a magnet school instead where they couldn't assign specific feeder schools for that capacity relief would be a non-starter. |
From what I've heard from the families I. know in Franklin Farm - they all want to move to the new high school. The people on the horse farms are the ones who want to stay at Oakton, and FMW wants to stay at South Lakes. Who knows.... |
Best to keep Fox Mill at South Lakes. You can always pupil place. |
+1. We are zoned rocky run/chantilly and would welcome a TJ 2 option nearby. We aren't interested at all in TJ1 due to the distance/long bus route. |
|
Are you okay with the current enrollment at Chantilly? Does your neighborhood run the risk of being redistricted like several current Chantilly High neighborhoods? |
| Someone mentioned that it would be bad optics for the new high school to only have middle to high income feeder schools. Seems like it could also be bad optics for the new school to be a magnet school. Like only the smart kids deserve a beautiful new building with amazing facilities. I could see the school board wanting to make it a regular high school with a very careful balance of feeder schools so that it is neither too high or too low in FARMS percentage. |
