Another 18yo foisted upon Ward 3 DC voters

Anonymous
Henry Cohen was the high school student whose musings we tolerated because it would have been impolite to do anything else. Another 18yo is now running for the Spring Valley-Kent-Sibley Hospital ANC 3D-03 seat, so far unopposed. Meet Quentin Colon Roosevelt and twitter site https://twitter.com/QColonRoosevelt very woke, out to abolish tipping, collecting signatures while his clueless adult neighbors don't even know the seat is vacant. Very earnest, energetic, making his parents proud, and qualified in what way exactly? Appointed to something by the Mayor, what was accomplished there?

Only a few days before the filing deadline you are about to get a Commissioner ruling on liquor licenses who can't get a legal drink, on zoning issues who's never signed and paid for a lease or bought a home, "oversight" of government agencies by someone who has overseen what? Although he might have almost gotten run over in the 5th grade, he says, so give him that on life experience.

Cue the contrived outrage now, the truth can never be stated in DC politics which is that the just-barely-adult candidate doesn't have the tested life experience to perform in public office. The j-b-a candidate is deemed idealistic if he says something foolish and over the top, as adults and parents our habit is to overlook and nurture. Meanwhile, the adult candidate is attacked for making the same statements and is held to a higher standard.

Get smart ANC 3D voters, elected office doesn't come with training wheels!

Who meet a minimum property ownership qualification. It's what the Founders would have wanted.

Presumably the only person who would care about this is an ANC 3D resident.

So does 3D have the craziest residents of any ANC?

Torn between whether it’s great that an 18yo wants to spend his free time in a volunteer city governance role, and cynically feeling like this is mostly a way for him to make his college applications stand out more, and feeling annoyed.

The good news is that 80% of ANC reps are wholly unqualified for the gig, so he’s not really an outlier. Anyone remember that City Paper story on Kathy Henderson in Ward 5? It would not be possible for this kid to to worse.

wah wah wah. if you don't like him, why don't you run against him. this is america. if trump can win, what is stopping you?

Wait. Did he complete his GED?

A couple years back I remember being told he quit high school because he was very interested in some type of gaming competition which was taking him all over the states.

I love that family is still using family names after all these years. I always wondered what it would be like to grow up with such a lineage. That particular branch of the tree seems quite accomplished. Also interesting his dads last name is being used as a middle name and it wasn’t reversed.

I don’t think he needs this for his college applications.

So run against him

No he doesn’t.
Grandma was a Yale professor, late mom Princeton graduate and dad Stanford graduate.

I've read some really crappy posts on this forum, but this takes the cake. Crusty NIMBYs throwing ignorant and bigoted shade at young people seeking to participate in local politics is utterly pathetic. If the OP doesn't like it, please find your way to a retirement village where you won't have to encounter any young people who are not employed there to help you function.

Why dont you run then?

Not OP, but I'm not sure why criticism a political candidate for lack of experience is so terrible. I'm all for young people participating in politics, and maybe he'd make a great ANC commissioner. Or maybe he's incredibly arrogant and naive and thinks he knows a lot more than he does, and will be a disaster. Honestly, the voter turnout among young people is low enough that I'd rather see an ambitious, enthusiastic 18 yo working on voter turnout, acting as the youth ambassador for a candidate her really believes in, or similar.

Most 18 year olds really do not have the life experience to do that job. I am someone who gets annoyed when people run for local political positions if they don't either have kids or have worked with them, because I think it's a massive blind spot in terms of local governance if you have no experience with children. So criticizing someone for being so young they lack other critical experience seems reasonable to me.

What do want? For us to pat him on the head and vote for him because just because of the novelty of someone so young running? Why?

If you live there and are not running yourself, you should be ashamed of complaining and doing nothing else. Or maybe he'll be fine on the ANC.
