Setting goals for running

When you are about to go for your daily run, how do you set your goal? Distance? Time run? Pace?

In the summer?

Survival. My bar is so low. If I can do 1 mile nonstop, it's I'm happy. If I can do more, I'm so damn proud of myself. I often have to resort to doing minute run/walk intervals.

Depends on the day. The key is to vary things. Some days my goal is distance and i run at a slow, steady pace to achieve it. Some days my goal is pace- i might do mile repeats at a goal pace for 3 or 4 miles with a few min break inbetween miles. Some days is more specific like "I'm going to warm up for 10min jogging, then run the big hill in our neighborhood 10 times, then jog 5min to cool down"

OP here -

LOL! The Feels Like temperature has to be below 80 for me to get out. So it's 6am or bust! But there are going to be a few high 60 days coming up in a week and I'm trying to improve my pace.

LOL! The Feels Like temperature has to be below 80 for me to get out. So it's 6am or bust! But there are going to be a few high 60 days coming up in a week and I'm trying to improve my pace.


If you want to improve your pace I recommend 2 runs a week for longer distance at a slower pace, and 2 runs a week of speed training (interval workouts, mile repeats etc- you can google some).

Best to run for a set time. Like 45 minutes

I've been running for a long time. I've kind of migrated to time over distance. That's partially due to the summer weather. Also due to my age. I've been seeking out softer surfaces and sometimes mile markers aren't available, so I'll just plan 40 minutes and will know that's about 4.5 miles for me. Could be closer to 4, but in this weather, I don't really care.

I map out my runs at the start of the week, so if I'm doing it by miles, I'd pencil in 3.5 on Monday, 4.5 on Wednesday, 3.5 on Thursday, 6 on Saturday.

If I'm doing it by time, I'd plan 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes.

Either way works, but time is feeling better for me lately.

Right now it is distance. It’s too hot to care about pace. If I’m training for a race, I’ll do intervals or tempo runs plus a long run.

NP, I just recently started running again after a long hiatus. Great time to start! My pace is slow and I am ready to stop very early on. Woof. I have to keep reminding myself to SLOW DOWN so I CAN continue the run.

I'm almost 40 so I enjoy a 20 minute run as the sun rises, and that's about as intense as I can get.

I switch between just time and doing intervals. I never care about distance

When I started running, I would do time (run for 30 mins, run for 45 mins). As I got more experienced I would do distance. 5km for short daily runs, 10km - 7 miles for longer.
