DH family keeps adding in reunions each year. We now would have 3 (his dad's side, mom's side and more of a neighborhood type party/reunion as several family live in the same area).
We have to travel 3 hours for these. I think 1 is enough. Am I wrong? The typical turn out for these is not great. We visit for Tgiving, Xmas eve and 4-5 other weekends a year. They come to use around 2 weekends a year. My family has no reunions so perhaps i don't appreciate them the way others do. But the food is never great, the kids are bored and I really hate having to block off several weekends a year for these becuase heaven forbid you plan something on one of them. I think we should just say 'no more, we are coming to 1 each year, we will rotate and take it or leave it. DH does not like them but feels obligated to go because of MIL. I have told him to go alone. He won't because he does not like these. So it is either all or nothing with us attending adn I am ready for all of us go to 1 and nothing else. Am i unreasonable? |

Yeah, family reunions suck. I think if MIL wants to go, she can do so. No one else should feel they have to at all.
If i feel pressured to do something it is a big "no thanks" |
| I have 17 first cousins ans never once been to a family reunion. Unless you count a funeral. |
|
DH should start going alone. If he doesn't want to go alone then no one should be forced to go.
Sorry, MIL you don't get to call dibs on my weekends year after year. DH needs to grow a pair. |

Looks like the consensus is NONE.
Tell MIL she is lucky to get 1 and shut up. |

One. Third weekend in July at the family vacation home in Vermont. Close friends are welcome.
We also do a Christmas party. Same people. |

I am of the mindset if someone has a party and it works and we WANT to go, great. If we don't want to go or have other plans, no big deal.
I don't do guilt trips and if you want to own certain weekends of my year you best being paying me. LOL |
| Zero!!!! Thankfully covid took care of all of them |
| I think I went to one about 15 years ago. |
| Define family reunion. I assume it’s not a holiday get together with one or the other spouse’s childhood nuclear family. With that assumption, I think the last one I went to was 20 years ago. |
|
I haven't been to one in like 20 years. Isn't that what weddings, funerals, milestone birthdays (that you throw for yourself) and milestone anniversaries are for??
I would tell them they get one a year. And yeah my DH is just like yours. He hates going to things, but disappointing his mom is the hardest for him. He won't go alone without me. |

The last one either side of my family had was in 1993. DH's family has never had one to my knowledge (and we've been together 20 years). Maybe I'll see if my mom wants to work on the next one for her side. It's always a big turnout (the last one in '93 had over 200 people). Her grandmother was one of 13 kids, grandfather one of 11.
Personally I think one big reunion a decade is enough. |
| I would say none is NOT unreasonable at all. Only old people like these and you talk to the same 5 people each time. Pass. DH should be lucky you go at all to any of them. He can go alone. |
