So, I’ve been trying to lose weight forever and nothing has worked. I have finally begun losing weight - over 16 weeks I have lost about 15 pounds by moving to a very low net carb, high protein diet with an intermittent fasting window of 11-7. Total calories are about 1000 a day. At this rate I lose a little less than 1 pound a week - so sustainable from that perspective. And, yet, it seems crazy. 1000 calories seems very low, although I am not hungry due to the high protein.
I would like to lose weight a bit faster, but cutting calories lower than 1000? That doesn’t sound healthy? Is my metabolism normal? What can I do to increase it that won’t also increase hunger? Exercise? what kind? different eating - cycle between fasted days and higher calorie days? Have cheat days? I’m glad to be losing weight but the caloric intake seems unhealthily low; however, eating more and being so overweight I was nearly obese also seems unhealthy. Or do I just have to be patient and consider that this really is my metabolism and my norm? Is a thousand calories a normal daily calorie allowance for weight loss? |
You're already on a starvation diet anything more and you're definitely anorexic |
Lift weights and do HIIT. Your resting metabolic rate will increase. |
How tall are you? |
If you aren't doing any kind of strenuous workout, honestly, it's really find to go down a few more calories. An adult who essentially is expending very little energy gets enough nutrition from 1,000 calories.
You might want to try doing a high carb day and then going back to low carb. It can help. |
What are your height and starting weight? That is a very, very low # of calories. The faster you lose, the harder it will be to maintain. |
My cousin did this at 1000 a day. She died of a heart attack in her classroom while teaching students. You have to feed your heart,. Coroner agreed |
OP, I eat 1400 or so to maintain my weight (5'2" 118-120#) and so losing a lb a week would be just under 1k. Its hard to do that day in and day out consistently and you absolutely have to weigh and measure since even a small miscalculation of a few hundred calories will wipe out any loss. But eatin gconsistently under BMR probably does slow your metabolism. I have had better luck alternating lower and higher calorie days. Alternate day fasting, fasting mimicking diet or one 36 hour fast a week are lots of options. Plus protein and weight bearing exericise to maintain muscle mass. |
Add more calories (at least 250) with an emphasis on protein, and try to walk for 30+ minutes every day. |
Or even just weights. Build muscle! |
If you are not hungry, maybe that will work for you long term. I know women with dainty appetites who rarely eat more than that.
I am always hungry every few hours no matter what I eat and I maintain 115 pounds eating more than 2000 calories daily. DH weighs 245, can easily go 8 hours between meals, and cant seem to lose weight on 1500 calories. We're all different. |
Chances are your cousin had an underlying heart issue that she was unaware of that was exacerbated by her low calorie intake. 1000 cals a day alone is not going to cause this. |
But if OP does this it's imperative to increase calories, by adding in protein |
OP, you really need to come back and give us your height. 1000 a day on someone 5’0 is different than someone 5’6”. |
Please don't consult the internet - especially this forum where a lot of people have disordered views of what normal eating is. Go to a nutritionist and get a customized plan for your body type, age, etc.
1,000 seems way too low and might endanger your health. |
