New Shepherd principal resigns

Anonymous
This is the second time in a row that a newly hired Shepherd principal resigns before the school year even starts. What gives?

And does anyone have insights on Tyra Russell, the new interim? Last time we got so lucky with Phyllis Hedlund stepping in at the last minute…really hoping the same will be true this time.

Her Twitter feed still touts her new job and she definitely resigned from her old position as principal of a GA ES.

I wonder if she failed the background check?

Alternatively, I wonder if this is a situation like the Ludlow principal that was hired from the Georgia ES system and who ended up resigning like 2 months later seemingly just overwhelmed by DCPS.

Tyra Russell seems to be the AP at Savoy? That is pretty different than Shepherd. It obviously could work out and it's hard to imagine Mayor Bowser not ensuring a quality person in that role but... I would be worried if I were a Shepherd parent.

They cited family reasons — I’d be hard pressed to imagine it was a background check issue. She seemed like a great candidate—we were excited about her.

The old Ludlow principal cited "family reasons" too. That was not true.

I don’t get the sense Bowser goes to bat for Shepherd. But I suppose I could be wrong… This is really disappointing news.

Different than the one announced a couple weeks ago on the DCPS page? https://dcps.dc.gov/biography/tiffany-emanuel-wright

So if teachers and admin are dumping out of DCPS what do you think the issue is?
Parents have the power to bring so much change to the actual system in DCPS. You guys are just not seeing the actual system for what it is. A total wreck

Pretty sure that many parents see that. But also have next to zero power.

As a parent - we have no power - other than voting for a new mayor.

What do you mean "you have no power"? That's how it works. Voters don't run individual schools. You elect leasers who run the schools. That's how it works...EVERYWHERE.

Well, in most places, people elect a school board and mayor separately, so greater ability to delineate school issues from crime, economy, etc.
