Shark threads

Am I going crazy or were some posts deleted on the recent shark thread in travel? Can someone explain once and for all what the issue is with sharks, Cape Cod, etc? I have seen references to prior threads so apologies if this has been covered already but searching turns up too many results to find them. I can’t tell if there is truly a shark instigator but at least in recent threads someone always seems to be responding “here we go again” - I’d love to appease my curiosity so I can move on from these threads.

Regardless of who starts them, they all get trashed by an insane person from Cape Cod. She is completely out of touch with reality and posts accordingly.

Because I’ve owed a home there for 20 years, bayside. I’m from the state and reluctantly here in the DMV

The reality is, Cape Cod has gotten more ‘sharky’ due to the rising seal population. My niece was a lifeguard for a good part of her teen years and while they did train off beaches in Chatham, the white population in recent years was a definite concern. There was recently a young 20 something killed by a white off a Wellfleet beach (lots of seals up there) and another man had his kayak followed and bitten, which turned him from skeptic to believer. There were few, if any shark warning signs years ago; they are more plentiful now. We never saw a helicopter on shark patrol early in our ownership; now it’s routine. Anyone who rents on the Cape with littles (and those that come from this area do tend to favor Chatham) should be aware of the fact that the whites do come quite close in around Chatham beaches. When the tide goes out, it’s particularly important to take care re: areas between sand bars, etc, because juvenile whites often feed in those areas (fish get trapped).

My point is the shark issues are not all hype and lies. If you haven’t spent any time on the Cape, any time visiting Woods Hole where the oceanographic institute is, you just might not be aware of current conditions.

I watch the Cape Cod threads carefully and participate, giving what I considered to be knowledgeable advice. I'm always stunned when you delete information that's important for tourists to know, because you make a judgment about an area you now say you've never been. Your site, your rules, I get it, but I wonder what the point is.

I don't know if you folks bother to read earlier posts in this thread, but I thought I explained it very clearly. While some posters may authentically be interested in sharks, there is one poster who believes any post about Cape Cod is part of an organized campaign to harass her. There are other posters who attempt to antagonize her for entertainment. They have even given her a nickname. So, a lot of those posts get removed.

As I understand from the poster above, if you go to a beach in Cape Cod, there will likely be wall-to-wall shark warnings with helicopters flying above and special apps to provide information about sharks sightings. Given those circumstances, anyone who needs to rely on DCUM to learn about sharks will probably be eaten regardless. In the meantime, nobody can be bothered to offer advice about where to get a cup of coffee. The only information anyone will provide about Cape Cod is about sharks. It's a very strange situation.

It goes way beyond that. That poster also tries to shut down legitimate advice based on real-life experiences.

Would you like me to post photos of the signs? I can do that for you. If you do visit and you go to the Beachcomber in Wellfleet, there is one sign there. You see them on the ocean side, not so much the bay side.

The coffee thing was pretty hilarious. Up and down 6A and 28 (which run the length of the Cape on each side) as well as 134, a cross road mid-Cape, there are plenty of bakeries, coffee spots, little grocery stores, large grocery stores with Starbucks inside etc. And there are DD’s EVERYWHERE. Unless this individual just wants to walk out their door and fall into a coffee place, they are clearly not even looking for one. I can leave my house in a very residential beach area, and walk 1/2 mile to not only a coffee place, but also a bakery, a little grocery store, a specialized donut store, etc. People can’t expect to go on vacation and not do a simple online search of their area. And there are little detailed maps and brochures EVERYWHERE for tourists.
