Montgomery Swim Team

Hi,

My son will be starting Blair this Fall. He is interested in joining the school swim team. He is not a very fast swimmer, started swim team 1.5 years back. Wanted to know if anyone has any idea how the try outs for the team are and do they take all swimmers or only the top few in the team.

Thanks

Blair swimming team is very welcoming -- great kids and parents !!!

Based on what I saw last year almost all went to tryout were accepted to the team. Not only that our coach (Coach Kelly) always tried to make sure all swimmers got a chance to compete. So yes, it is likely your son will be accepted and assigned to compete.

We will have a tough year to compete with WJHS, Whitman, Churchill, Wootton after moving from Division B to Division A.

Cheer for you son !

Is practice before or after school? All year or just during a set season? Is it also 5 days a week?

Swimming is a winter sport for MCPS high schools. Practices and meets will only be during that season. He could consider other sports for the fall and spring seasons if there is something he’s interested in.

DC starts at Blair in 2023. They've always been a strong swimmer and may enjoy this, but wondered if it would conflict with other afterschool clubs and activities. It's hard to participate in a sport and competitive academic teams.

Different MCPS school, but my kid did swim team last year. Team swim practices were twice a week, one practice after school (3 p.m.), one before school (5 a.m.). First practices (tryouts) were mid-November, last ones were late January. Meets were on Saturdays (various times).

Practices are only twice a week for a varsity sport?

Most kids are club swimmers and swim elsewhere

Swimming practices at MLK pool 5:30 to 6:30 AM (Tue/Thu). If your kid is a club swimmer, you only need to go once.

Also, they are all fighting club teams for pool time. High schools don’t have pools.

By club you mean summer pool clubs or some year around activity?
