It seems that FCCPS is decreasing the number of students that will go into HA1 in 7th grade. Out of the two classes of Math 5/6 only a handful in each class is going into Math 8, while in previous generations most of the Math 5/6 went into Math 8. Thoughts? |
It might be a temporary thing that is part of the COVID aftermath. I would imagine that kids who were at home 2 years ago might not be able to meet the benchmark for the higher level math classes early. |
The risk is that a temporary shock ends up generating a permanent change. Coming off of VMPI, districts have wanted to phase out accelerated math pathways. Learning loss provides the mechanism for doing this. |
Right, so I wonder if this is learning loss or they changed their requirements. |
Unless you do geometry over the summer--which i think is really dumb as you have an awful summer with barely knowing any geometry you cannot access IB HL.... |
That’s okay for the majority of students. Most do not need to take this class in high school. |
*most should not take this class.
No one needs to take this class in high school. This course is only appropriate for the most advanced students that are beyond calculus before college. For the vast majority, taking calculus in high school is more than sufficient. |
My understanding is that you can't do the IB diploma unless you get ahead of grade level math. Most kids try to do that in middle school by skipping Math 6 or 7. I know many kids who are cramming to learn Math 7 this summer so they can take Math 8 when they start 7th grade in the fall. The message in FCCPS is that if you're at grade level for math in middle school, you're behind. I hate it, but that's the reality. We screwed up with our oldest and are now focusing on math for our younger kid so she doesn't end up "behind" and doing Math 6 as a 6th grader.... |
Loudoun County changed to IAAT test to get into algebra, from what was previously a mock SOL8. Now you have to pass SOL 7 to get into prealgebra, those with 90% are supposed to be informed about option to take IAAT, with an appeals process for those who don't get 90%. In some schools, everyone who passed prealgebra was informed they could take the test for algebra. |
Exactly, and additionally you cant take Calculus in HS unless you do Algebra either in 7th grade or take geometry over the summer or take two maths in one year. |
You dont do Calculus unless in HL math |
No. Most take BC calculus before they take the HL class in FCCPS. |
if you do Algebra in 8th you can only take IB SL 1 and 2 in 11th and 12th, there is no time for Calculus. For Calculus you need three years : alg 2 in 9th, precal in 10th(ib hl1), cal in 11th and ib hl2 in 12th. How can you get the IB Diploma AND take a full year of calculus if you do Algebra in 8th grade? you canNOT. |
What is HL math? |
My kid went to school there and took H Alg 2, IB SL AA 1, BC Calc then the HL class. You do not have to take SL 1 and 2. When your children get to high school you will see how there are different IB SL course options. My younger child does not have the same math interest and will take one of the less rigorous options, which may still include the other IB SL courses if he wants to try to earn the IB diploma. |
