Silverman has been a great Council Member. She sponsored the Paid Family Leave Act and won re-election against an opponent who opposed it. This was a very significant and welcome advance for DC families.

Now do her oversight of DOES, whose two-pronged failure during covid -- not being able to handle unemployment claims and allowing thousands of DC residents to be defrauded by scammers -- was absolutely shameful. She's the Council member with oversight over that and has gotten a complete pass. She's done nothing to hold DOES accountable.

Funny, Silverman has oversight over DOES, but she doesn't run it. You should be upset with those responsible for the problems, not with her. I remember her personally helping to answer calls to the help line even though that wasn't her job. She actually worded very diligently to perform her oversight duties. But oversight is just that. She is not responsible for actually running it.

You couldn't be more wrong. She was exactly the opposite of asleep at the switch. She was completely on top of what was happening. But, as you and I know agree, she doesn't run the agency so it was not within her power to fix things. Please explain in detail what you think she should have done that she didn't do?

McDuffie was awful in Ward 5, so no, I would not support him if he challenged Silverman, about whom I have mixed feelings (agree that her support for paid family leave was really valuable).
