With Gustavo Petro winning in Colombia, it looks like the left is resurging in Latin America and maybe, just maybe, the US will keep its grubby hands out and just let things go as they may.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/06/20/petro-latin-america-left/ Following the failed coup in Bolivia to install a Christian Fascist, Bolivians promptly elected a Socialist instead. Peru elected a Marxist over a dictator's daughter. Colombia for the first time in modern history elected a leftist, when the other option was a Trump-style fascist. And no matter how hard the US tries, nobody actually recognizes that Juan Guaido is president of Venezuela. You may not like Maduro, I'm no fan myself, but he is their president, not that other guy. Now I am counting the days until Lula unseats that horrible Bolosonaro, one of the worst people in the world for the environment, and one whom the US right wing heartily endorsed. Thankfully our focus on Ukraine will cause us to leave Latin America alone (sarcasm, sort of). |
| I don’t think that many people care. |
|
“The Left” will always win. Because we care about the workers and the people. They are the wellspring from which our power flows.
And we’re going to win here, too. |
| Well. we'll have somewhere to move to in 2025. |
|
And that's why Latin America is a mess and their people flood our borders. They want to escape the disasters they elect. Zero economies because they're decimated by high inflation and disasters of state run enterprises. Peruvians and Bolivians will have fun waiting in lines for days to get toilet paper like Venezuelans.

| Peru has experienced an enormous improvement in living standards and poverty rates over the last quarter century. Poverty rates I believe have dropped 65%. Their Constitution, which protects many of the policies underlying that improvement, thankfully is unlikely to change under this Marxist. That particular election isn't as indicative as some would like to claim I think. Colombia we'll see but I expect a snapback. |
No, people “flooding our borders” are fleeing Central American dictatorships that were propped up by the US that turned out to be thugs and/or gave way into drug cartels. Fueled by our war on drugs, by the way. You might want to try reading books instead of watching Fox News. |

I'm sure no one fled the utopias the left brought to Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, or fled all of the 'equality' that Mao brought to China, lol. It's never a failed far left govt that's the problem. Always the big bad US and 'capitalism' that made left run countries fail. Remind me again who turned out better? South Korea or North Korea? |
Let's face it - leftist governments and propped up fascist governments have both been a disaster. Not even including communists b/c that's been a separate disaster altogether. |
Probably not, but we are dual nationals with Colombia and could return in 2025 if things get dicey here so we care. In general Colombia has been steadily improving economically and socially. |
Look at all the Swedes and Dutch desperate to escape |
*insert smirk* |
Central Americans were not "flooding our borders" until Reagan decided to make Central America his battle ground. His policies were a resounding failure. You can thank the likes of Oliver North for opening the door wide open for the drug cartels. |
You mean while the US had its hands busy in the never ending wars it did not have time to engineer enough coups in Peru and they are thriving? |
