There is an ongoing lice problem in Campbell and the administration doesn’t seem to think it’s a big deal. They fail to tell parents to check their child’s hair when a classmate has lice and only mention it to parents when it’s gets to the point where it is out of control. This has been happening since at least February. Any idea how to encourage admin to take this more seriously? |
Talk to the county/health department as no one does anything about lice anymore.
https://slate.com/human-interest/2018/01/lice-in-school-let-em-stay.html They changed the policy a LONG time ago. |
Because it isn’t. Kids get lice. |
As a pre-k teacher who once got lice my advice is to do a quick check with a lice comb once or twice a week and have your child wear their hair up as much as possible (that’s just good advice in general for school imo) |
Isn't school out for the summer? Why are you whining about this now? |
+1. Seems a little late for this particular post. |
What grade level(s)? I have been checking since you reported this here a while back, but can you be more specific so I don’t freak out every time I have an itch? The problem is also parents. When my kids caught it, it was from a family who didn’t want to tell anyone they had it because they were embarrassed. The school didn’t even know until I reported it when all my kids got it after a play date at the other family’s home. But it was a couple weeks before the letter went out. I think that’s the County Health Dept’s fault. They aren’t very swift with notifications, even when it’s flu or Norovirus outbreaks. |
First grade. I understand that there is no need to keep kids home if they have lice. But I would appreciate them letting us know if a child in class had lice. I have been checking my kids hair every week. I found lice yesterday. When I called the school nurse she told me yeah we have been seeing a lot of lice the past two weeks. Ok so why didn’t you tell us?? But you are right another problem is parents who don’t want to tell others that they have lice. |
Cuz I found out on the last day of school. I am whining as you say because it is an ongoing problem and I am considering pulling my child out. Yes kids in our neighborhood school get lice as well but based on my conversations with parents it seems to be much worse at Campbell. |
Ugh, I'm so sorry OP. At least the school year is over and the summer hopefully can be a reset. At my kids' old elementary lice was a huge problem and the only solution I could find was to fanatically wake up an extra 20 minutes early every morning to braid my two daughter's long hair each and every day. Add in some hair spray for good measure. : ) No other attempt at putting hair "up" short of braids or buns (i.e. half-ups, pony tails) were sufficient. |
What kind of hair spray? That fairy tales kind or regular hair spray? And what kind of braids? My daughter is going to Campbell next year! |
So you’ve talked to maybe three people and you’ve determined that it’s much worse at this one particular school. Damn, your critical thinking skills are so poorly lacking, lady. What’s your explanation for COVID outbreaks at one school and none at others. “Cuz” that’s what’s been happening all year long. Lice happens. COVID happens. Campbell, just like every other school, follows the same protocols. |
So your kid never actually got lice, but you’re considering pulling them out of school for next year anyway in case there is still live next year? Every elementary school gets lice. I guess you could homeschool? |
My MCPS kid got lice and we let the school know. The policy was to only tell the other parents after 3 cases in the same class. |
From the Arlington County website:
What is your lice management plan? The role of School Health staff in lice management is to: Provide education to parents, children and staff about head lice Help identify students with head lice Make recommendations to parents about treatment of head lice Check groups of students for head lice when that is appropriate We work in conjunction with families and teachers to identify lice and with health providers to treat and manage lice infestations. https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Programs/Health/Public-Health/School-Health/School-Health-FAQ |
