Here to ask the same thing. We are taking my kid to visit next month and hopefully see what’s what. He was admitted to the honors college and got merit aid… it has a program he likes and we have family in Tucson so he applied. Curious if anyone has more info on here about Arizona! (I saw somewhere that like 40% of their students are not from Arizona! Lots of California kids?). |
This is so true. I have one in state and one oos. In state DC is living in an off campus apt with friends, and loving it, but logistics is so easy and convenient. |
DC got into LM with $39k/yr merit, but they have chosen to go oos public with no merit. Sigh. I was pushing hard for LM, but they wanted to leave MD, which I guess I can understand but I think the ROI for LM is really great. Not that sure about the expensive oos public - Penn State. |
Most insurance plans cover a strep test, etc. at Minute Clinic, outpatient places like Patient First, etc Seems silly to travel home for a strep test. |
And Oregon kids living on the western side of OR. They are trying to escape the rain for sunny Tucson. Great foods and better tamales than many other places. If you are visiting next month you are visiting during one of the better weather months. That could sway your decision. The rest of the months it's hat, sunglasses, shade in your car, stay inside in air conditioning kinda weather. People are out running at 6am then you don't really see them outside. It's a nice campus. And it's just ~4 years. |
And schools are closed for their long tradition of rodeo week. |
| My kid got accepted to Kenyon last night, $35k merit. We were pleasantly surprised to find out so quickly! |
Congrats!! SAIC is a great school for the right person, and Chicago is a fabulous city. |

Against a chaotic political backdrop, I'm thrilled my DC was admitted to McGill! We remain waiting for U of Toronto, Western and UBC admissions too.
Our DC is a dual American-Canadian citizen, so his tuition will be roughly $20K USD (paying the out of province Canadian citizen rate). It would be a bit lower for other schools in Canada since Quebec charges more for out of province than Ontario or BC. |
When did you hear back from McGill? My kid is waiting - also dual citizen. Would you be willing to share stats? |
Congrats! I was also surprised by the two month early acceptance. I wonder what led to that. |
So not having a car on campus won’t be an issue? We haven’t visited and wondering if most of students don’t bring their cars on campus. |
NP here. My kid also got into Loyola Maryland with $39k and she definitely has chosen a private school further away that costs a lot more. Sigh. Honestly, I do think her top choice is a better fit, but I'm making her go to LM's accepted student day. |
My DC got into SAIC and VCUarts with merit aid around 20K. Still waiting to hear back from Umich-stamps. Still pretty undecided on which school they will choose. Plan on doing lots of visits soon. |
SAT 1500, GPA 3.75 DC did do the application on the early side (early December and added senior grades a bit later). |
