If someone reports their child as testing positive for COVID, does the rest of the elementary school class need to either quarantine or test? Are the rules district wide or school by school? |
Fully vaccinated kids do not need to quarantine. The school will reach out directly. |
It's district wide- still quarantining if unvaxxed. The whole class wouldn't be a close contact in most cases though. |

It's the last day of school yesterday/today/tomorrow. So who cares. But yes, see above and it's district wide. They are also pretty lame about identifying close contacts and don't try that hard. In elementary, they just tell the kids who sit at the positive kid's table. My middle school kid sat right next to a friend in class who was positive and we were never called. |
test to stay. |
No. If they are unvax and no symptoms they test to stay. https://www.apsva.us/school-year-2021-22/health-safety-information/test-to-stay-program/ The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Test-to-Stay Program (TTS) allows students identified as close contacts to remain in school instead of quarantining at home. WHO: To be eligible, students must be unvaccinated, asymptomatic, and identified as a close contact via exposure that occurred at school. (More info for vaccinated students) WHEN: Free proctored COVID-19 testing will be provided for these students at Syphax from 8:15 a.m.-7 p.m. on school days. The program requires close contacts to take the COVID-19 rapid test for five consecutive days following the exposure. |
Trying to prepare myself for kindergarten next year and back-up care if needed. Hope our school is as lame as yours! |
And they don't do this if it's the lunch table rather than classroom table. Or at least we weren't notified. |
When my kid had covid they asked me if he had any close contacts. I said no, so I don't think anyone was notified beyond the schoolwide email. When my kid was identified as a close contact he was able to keep going to school because he was vaccinated. I think unvaccinated kids can test to stay. |
Why does APS require booster to avoid quarantine? VDH guidelines specify just a two dose regiment to avoid quarantine. I am really not comfortable boosting my 5 and 8 yo who are both vaxxed (but not boosted) and who have had COVID! This is getting ridiculous. Stay home if you’re sick and move the F on. |
Then you can test to stay. |
If a kid in class had Covid were any masking requirements put in place in APS? |
Pretty sure so far the booster requirement is just for 12+. |
Nope. |
They may require boosters next year, but right now it's not required of 5 and 8 year olds. My vaccinated, unboosted 9 year old was identified as a close contact last week and did not have to quarantine. |
