| Maybe I’ve missed it, but I haven’t seen anything about increased security at MCPS schools or even what the safety measures already in place are. I went to the website and could not find info on this. I’ve noticed differences between schools when it comes to security measures. I’d like to know what MCPS already requires, and what it is planning to do county-wide. |
| Gun control |
They've been adding security vestibules to schools for the past few years: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/facilities/construction/project/securityinitiatives.aspx |
Gun control has nothing to do with making MCPS safer. MCPS is doing nothing. Most parents wanted them to remove SRO's and police from the schools. They did. |
How did the police do in Uvalde? Or Parkland? Don’t get me wrong, I support having SROs in schools. I just think it is ridiculous to think they’d stop school shootings. |
They didn't do well but that's not a justification to not have them. If they did their job they would have gone in, killed the killer and got those kids medical attention and that is the point. |
Not a reason not to have them, but it is a reason to think they don’t help much against school shootings in practice. So sure, bring back SROs, but we still need to so something about gun control. |
Until the GOP is driven from power, not a lot can be done. |
If these incidents are representative, SROs will stand around, run away or arrest parents. |
Ironically, the liberals are in power. |
| Our principals have sent out emails this week detailing current practices and where they are tightening up. I think all the schools now have a buzz-in system with locked doors, which they implemented after Newton. Ours is now tightening up who gets buzzed in and how -- you have to give your name and purpose. I've noted at our MS, the buzz-in system is a bit difficult because there are so many kids in portables that they are constantly in and out during passing period, an just hold the doors open for each other. They are also sending staff around to check regularly to make sure external doors are locked and not propped. |
There have been SRO's who have also saved lives. |
Did you go the MCPS website and look at the Department of Safety and Emergency Management, or call Central Office, or call and talk with a principal at any school, Or watch any BOE meeting about school safety??? |
Like at park land or uvaldre? Oops |
