Appetizer for lo mein

Anonymous
We’re hosting a lunch tomorrow and serving veggie lo mein as the main dish (no comments on that please, it may not be the best choice but it is what it is for a variety of reasons). What can we serve for an appetizer with drinks? We don’t live in an area where we can easily get Asian foods. Would it be super weird to have nuts, olives and cheese and crackers? Thinking of having a tofu scallion soup in mushroom broth for the first course.

Crab Rangoon are easy to make at home with wonton wrappers from the store

I take it you’re going for a vegetarian menu?

Yes, I forgot to mention vegetarian. Crab Rangoon is an excellent idea but we’re living outside of the US, not in an Asian country, and we’d never be able to find wonton wrappers or cream cheese. I know this is a weird request. Please help me think outside the box.

Personally I think it’s fine to not have all courses be the same theme.

Please dont serve crab rangoon. You can do better, OP. Try dumplings or something else.

I would make an Asian mushroom soup or something light.

I think it’s completely fine to do a cheese board since your options are so limited. If you were able to find wrappers I’d say to try vegetable spring rolls or something like that. Do you have access to edamame or sugar snap peas? You could do a crudite platter with an Asian-flavor dipping sauce.

OP, this is a great idea and just what I was looking for, thanks. I think I may be able to find miso paste, and make a dip to serve with cucumbers, radishes, carrots and maybe edamame. It’s more Japanese than Chinese, but seems a better fit for the Asian menu. Thanks!

Can you buy spring rolls from the stores in your area? That’s just heat and serve.

I would say spring rolls, summer rolls or dumplings.
